What are the best browsers & VPNs for Linux?

I migrated from windows a couple of days ago and I was amazed to find out that there are browsers other than Chrome & Firefox. After reading through the Wikipedia page for browsers, I thought I should get your opinion on what browsers are the best. Some of my friends recommended Chromium & Brave, but I want to know what this sub thinks. Also, I want to know if there are good free VPNs for Linux you would recommend.

I used Firefox because it came preinstalled on Ubuntu, but I’m definitely not going to continue using it since it has major ping problems. I also might switch to Manjaro soon, will I face compatibility issues with any of the browsers you will suggest because I’m switching distros?

Edit: I of course recognize that “Best” is subjective. I thought that was obvious. I thought I did not need to say “the best in your opinion”. I guess I had to. sigh.

I just use Firefox, and the proton vpn. free tier. I also use the adguard vpn at times for adblocking. or the adguard dns servers.

‘best’ is subjective.

I use expressvpn which isn’t the least expensive out there but I’ve been pretty happy with them.

Browser? I use Chrome but only because I run Debian Unstable and chromium releases there are a little buggy about half the time.

I like the Vivaldi browser because of all the options that it has. And the bookmark handling is second to none. Expressvpn has a Linux kill switch and works better than any other VPN that I have tried. In five years I have only had a connection drop once, and the kill switch works very well.

I use firefox. And pia vpn on debian 10. Best is only a person’s opinion

I would recommend the browser you like most. Because objectively speaking there is no such thing as “the best”. For my part, I prefer for example Vivaldi. Other users would not use this browser because it is not published under an open source license.

None. Usually the bandwidth is not very good. And with free providers I would be even less sure if they use log files or not. Depending on what you want to do with a VPN, this can be problematic.

Also a ProtonVPN user. They have OK support for Linux. Wish there was an option to a nice UI like in Windows, but I learnt to like their script. I have starting with a systemd service so I don’t have to think about it most of the time.

As for the VPN itself, it’s good and it’s a company I trust not to sell my info.
Only issue I have with it them that some of their servers are blocked by Netflix, so something to consider if it’s relevant to you.

the kill switch works very well.

Yeah it does. I also like that they have .deb and .rpm packages for folks who like that stuff - and I get about 90%+ of my bandwidth over VPN which for me is worth the $13 a month

Maybe you had a different experience form me. I play on lichess a lot and Firefox is always slow there. Do you face similar problems? Maybe that’s not due to Firefox, and it’s due to something else. IDK. What do you think?

Well I went ahead & opened a lichess game in both Google Chrome as well as Firefox ESR (ver. 78.03).

Both instances ran at 51-53 ping and performed, to my perception identically. But I do see lots of posts suggesting these issues to be a factual problem with firefox if I do run a web search.
