What is with the local "news"?

Other names from by-gone decades and a ‘golden age’ of local STL TV news as contrasted with the present would include Chris Condon, Dianne White, Steve Schiff, Patrick Emory, Max Roby, Herb Humphries (“Reporting Nightside!”), Susan Kidd [paired with Larry Connors as a co-anchor team on 2 back in the 80], Larry Connors [who tried to become a kind of Limbaugh wannabe after his messy departure from KMOV], Trish Brown, and a host of other names.

In the early '70s, when Schiff and Hunter were co-anchors, KMOX (as it was in those days) used to run an ad that showed the two of them eating in a restaurant. The waitress came and took their orders, with Schiff saying, “Lox”, and Hunter saying “Ham Hocks,”

Pretty cringy, and definitely something that you would not (thank God) see today. I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t seen it myself.

Mike Bush! You’re right he doesn’t look much different than he did when he started out as the sports guy on KSDK back in the 80s and did those ‘Blues Brothers’ parody promos with the ill-fated weatherman Bob Richards. He’s like the Dick Clark of local St. Louis TV.

And you’re also right that he’s one of the ‘last men standing’ in terms of being a long-term anchor like Julius Hunter, Karen Foss, et al. So he’s an exception.

Gotta ask, what further information do you need to know about Trump?

Agreed. The local TV news is not “TRUMP!!!” 24/7. For that sort of torture, you’d have to go to Fox News or Newsmax or a conservative talk radio station.

I’ve seen at least two segments in the last week on Ch 4 that were basically ads for Trump. Talking about him on vacation and what he might be doing next and where his next rally’s would be located.

I’ve used hdhomerun for years. That plus plexpass gives you full dvr functionality with guides and everything. You can get quad tuners, too.

I’ll have to look at Tablo, I’ve never heard of that one.

C’mon, get it right. STARM mode! /s

Yeah, I’ve noticed that the ‘red’ is much less overpowering now than in that first week broadcasting from the new studio.

However, I haven’t watched enough to know if they’ve retired the “Storm Mode” thing. Whenever I heard that phrase, my mind immediately went to “Storm a la Mode.”

The Flapjackers are always jackflapping about policy, but they never hit the real truth: people prefer French toast. Those fluffy stacks have nothing on our beautifully battered bread.

Oh I see!

I don’t watch the local news. But yeah I see - just more steam of anxiety to an already heavily saturated pool of overblown fearful everyday neighborhood shenanigans

Don’t for get the Canadian Maple conglomerates. They have a horse in this fight. They don’t care if pancakes or Fat wins- the battle is what they’re wanting.

Saw Julius Hunter and some other anchors I don’t remember the names of eating dinner at a big round table at a Chinese restaurant in Soulard in the early 90s. They were in blazers, almost like something from the background of an Anchorman sequel.

It’s probably good to keep up with the ever present threat of authoritarianism

He has a (higher than he has any right to) chance of being the next President. The batshit crazy things he says have a chance to be very relevant in the future (and may determine whether or not I need to move).

So I think it’s important to stay on top of those things as maddening as it can be.

From what I can tell Storm Mode has been retired. They’ve been using “First Alert Weather Days” now.

Honestly I stopped watching channel 4 about a week after the change. I don’t like all the red and the squares moving across the screen behind them is incredibly annoying. The first alert 4 marquee also ticks by. I’m not a dedicated news watcher, but now when I do it’s channel 2.

Sometimes it can useful to keep tabs on the ‘other side’ by watching or listening small doses of right-wing media just to see what line they’re pushing. But, for the sake of your blood pressure, restrict yourself to only a few minutes here and there.
