Which Proton VPN distro should I download?

Looking at the options on their website I see a number of different options but none for Pop!os, but I have seen various references to people using it, am I correct in thinking that the Debian or Ubuntu would be the option that would work?

https://protonvpn.com/support/linux-vpn-setup/

If anyone else has VPN suggestions I would appreciate them - my main requirement is that they have a graphical UI

Pop base is Ubuntu, Pop 22.04 base is Ubuntu 22.04, so I would use Ubuntu 20+.

Proton VPN can work with the default OpenVPN client.

You dont HAVE to use the ProtonVPN client, but it likely has a few extra features.

Side note: be SURE to turn off the VPN kill switch feature, BEFORE you remove the protonvpn software. (assuming you want to remove it)

There are a numerous posts a months where people try out the VPN (or other vpns) which activate a kill switch option, then they remove the VPN software, and the kill switch is still active.

The Kill switch feature disables networking if the VPN connection ever goes down, as a security measure to prevent accidental net access.

For me the proton dont work on pop idk why

Thank you, that is what I thought, but they seemed to suggest that Debian was the most compatible with Debian and then I remembered that Ubuntu is based on Debian…

I am not entirely clear on the distinction there.

Thank you for the heads up about the Killswitch, I noticed some of the threads when looking around for an answer but did not necessarily “clock it” in my head.

That is good to know about the Open VPN too

I am having that issue as well - it is downloaded and I am logged in and the internet is working but it will not connect. I am not sure what the problem could be as I have not installed any sort of firewall (unless there is some sort of default?)

Ubuntu, and by extension Pop, is based on Debian. But there are also some significant differences. For example, if you’re running straight Debian, you should not enabled Ubuntu repos on that system.

So like marvelggg said, since they provide an Ubuntu specific version, you should go with that one.

I use the Free Proton VPN plan, with just the OpenVPN client on my Pop_OS box. it works good enough for my minimal needs.
