Why does NordVPN need 81% of my CPU? I am not even connected to VPN.

Right click → Go to details → End process tree.

Then relaunch it and see if it gets the same CPU usage.

I bet mods would delete this post really quickly and blame you for the problems

Do you have Meshnet active?

Had same problem. Check nord settings and disable Threat Protection.

must be all the web scraping

- for context, i stopped using NordVPN ages ago. i got an annual subscription at a great price.

about halfway through, i discovered that i couldn’t connect all of a sudden. after further investigation, i found that my account had been banned. NordVPN was accusing me of “web scraping” and suspended my account indefinitely.

i contacted their support, told them not only was i not web scraping, but that i didn’t know what that was and couldn’t do it even if i wanted to.

i was told that their automated tools had a “suspicion” of activity that violated their TOS, and that the decision was final, with not possibility of appeal.

they didn’t even refund the remaining amount on my sub

this is/was a common problem, and i was not the only one who experienced this.

I will never use NordVPN, and i share this story at every opportunity.

I have no answer for your CPU usage. It does sound overly high.

My recommendation is to find another VPN provider regardless.

Probably a silly question but is this the latest version of Nord? Could you try downloading it again and uninstalling the current version. I had this problem before and it turns out there was a update followed by a hot fix because it caused this high cpusage in certain situations.

do you have threat protection on? i’m on a mac and noticed it had increased my ram and cpu usage.

Probably downloading a new version or update in the background. If it is constant then some service is locked up and your going to have to quit out of it to try and fix it. Make sure you have the latest version installed for sure.

For me the Threat Protection Pro (Anti-Malware) is what does this, I turn it off and it kills that task.

I had this too for some time, and for some weird reason, completely uninstalling and reinstalling my graphics driver via DDU fixed it; nothing else did.
I have no Idea why reinstalling my GPU driver solved the problem.

Just get Hide.me

I get 13% on mine just for background stuff alone, but I think it depends on the computer and how much power it has. Plus, I understand Nord’s been having server issues lately, likely due to disgruntled TikToker traffic, so it may be having to work overtime these days.

I never have this issue it’s usually less then 5%

Same thing here. After recent win10 update, same results with threat protect disabled. Not even connected and still running at 4x%/4x%. Looks like an api call is hung in endless loop.

I thought my issue was over with the new update. Now it’s back again! It’s at 13% for app and 4% for background process, and it’s climbing! For doing nothing more than idling, and not even connected to VPN. It’s a runaway train! It’s not as high as 81%, it’s only 17% combined. But give it time and it will get there. There might be a memory leak!

NordVPN software is bloated and buggy as hell. Don’t know how many times I’ve had to either log out and perform multiple reboots or completely uninstall and reinstall just to get an internet connection. Yes, sometimes it goes to bloat autopilot for me, too, sucking up resources like a five-dollar whore at a crack house.

Many of their IPs (in the US at least) are burned so access to some streaming services is limited.

Best advice: find another VPN service. I will be.

What cpu do you have?

Probably scanning your hard drive and sending all that information to nord vpn to sell. :face_savoring_food:

Hmm. Can’t we end a process tree from Processes tab as well? Anyway. I have rebooted the system completely twice. The thing is, this only started after an update. Every time I reboot and log back into Windows, and NordVPN autostarts, NordVPN asks me to allow a background process. I click to allow and then I get this. I think it was in this order. I will give it a spin again when I’m back at that PC again.
