Would a VPN extension cover Chrome extensions that are not running in a browser tab?

I’m using Windscribe VPN and JSTorrent Lite on my Chromebook. JS Torrent doesn’t open in a tab. It opens in a window. Is this just cosmetic like Google Hangouts? I want my torrenting to be through the VPN.

Alternatively, any of you guys have a VPN/torrent setup that works well for you (on ChromeOS)?

A system wide VPN will work for ALL types of traffic. That’s a VPN you configure in the chrome system wide settings.

A proxy server setup through a chrome extension (such as ZenMate extension or similar) will ONLY work for normal browser tabs traffic (except for Flash, will will not go through the proxy)

This works perfect: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/forum/discussion/22235/has-anyone-successfully-set-up-openvpn-pia-on-chromebook-chrome-os

If your Chromebook has Android support there’s a flag you can enable and if you install and connect a VPN Android app it will act as a system-wide VPN.

There are external boxes you can purchase and you connect to it and then the box connects to the WiFi network and can be setup to use a VPN.

That’s a shame. Do you know of any VPNs that support L2TP (so it’s a system wide VPN) that have free trials on ChromeOS? I couldn’t find any for free. I know all the good ones are paid but I don’t torrent enough to justify a subscription.

I noticed here that pia supports l2tp so I might just go with that as I’ve used pia before.

I’m pretty sure it’s enabled by default as I’ve not changed any flags and it works for me that way. I’m on developer mode so YMMV

Useful to know but at that point it’s like paying a subscription for torrenting.

I don’t know of any. However I would be careful using any “free” VPN that come as a browser extension. They can do a lot of shady stuff with the permissions that those extensions require.

Private Internet Access has a 7 day money back guarantee, and they support both a L2TP vpn and a Chrome extension.

l2tp

L2TP+PSK is not reliably secure anymore.

I’m not using the VPN for security reasons. And my Chromebook has restrictions preventing me from activating Dev mode so I can’t use OpenVPN, making browser extension VPNs and L2TP my only options (though I could be wrong). But thanks for the info!
