I connect to vpn and i triy to open videos on my mobile or laptop… and youtube asks to login. i switch to 4g and do not connect to vpn and i can watch the video.
it affects all yt sites… even newpipe is affected.
does anyone encounter this issue or is just the vpn i am using? i am using a colombia server configured on the router with wireguard.
it’s a hassle to do disconnect from the vpn to watch a video tutorial…
Contact YouTube, they’re the ones choosing to make you log in.
There’s a feedback for Proton where they will attempt to reach out to sites which choose to affect your usage because you’re using a VPN, but ultimately it’s up to the site itself.
You definitely can watch youtube with proton vpn and a frontend but you need sometimes to rotate your server that happen to be blocked.
Now, if you already tried ALL the swiss servers you probably have to use another country.
The secure core options mostly work and the first hop is Switzerland.
This is happening with all VPNs at the moment with YouTube.
One solution is to log in to YouTube with a dummy account, and then you can connect your VPN to a non-monetising country and resume watching ad-free YouTube as before.
Proton VPN is regularly adding new servers. And they just added a bunch of new cities and countries recently. Try connecting to one of them, or to one of the higher numbered servers in one of the more long-standing locations. There is a good chance that Google will not have registered them as VPN addresses yet.
Change VPN location and go back onto YouTube the video will then play.
This happened to me yesterday on PC. I just refresh the page and could continue normally.
In my situation Youtube wanted me to confirm I was not a bot, when using Proton VPN that happened a couple of days ago. And also the first time I ever encountered a issue with Proton VPN now I sadly cannot remember what server and country I used. But if it happens again I will write in here and report it too Proton
i know is not on proton side but contact google is wasted time. i wondered if anyone has the same problem. or if proton had servers that worked with youtube like they have for other streaming services like netflix.
thanks
I tried connecting to.servers in Albania but I still get ads. What else do I need to change?

You’re not getting the problem.
YouTube chooses which clients they directly (or, well, on varying degrees of directness) they serve. The exact same as Netflix does.
The reality of the situation is that a lot of people use VPNs to circumvent various legal restrictions on content, and the folks that provide that content are obligated by the artists to try an honor those legal restrictions.
Using VPN to demand of a provider that they show you content they can’t legally show you is like walking into the Metropolitan Museum of Art and demanding that show you the Mona Lisa. They simply can’t legally bring the Mona Lisa to New York to show you. You may be able to cheat by sending someone to Paris with a camera to take a picture and send it to you in New York (i.e. using a VPN), but you can’t get mad at the person with the camera when the Louvre refuses the entry.
I think YouTube might have started showing ads to Albania and Moldova (my other previous go-to) a few months back.
I was using Afghanistan before with no ads and a couple of African countries. Syria works nicely, although you may find yourself blocked from other sites due to sanctions, etc.
