Actual VPN service

Hi there,

Do you know any provider for an actual VPN service for individuals ?

I mean, there’s a lot of VPN providers out there, but it’s usually just gateway that you connect through a ciphered tunnel and not an actual network with multiple clients. I don’t even know what keyword to search as google is full of those services…

I’m behind cgnat and would like to connect my home network (HA, Nas etc) from outside.

I tried zerotier, but it’s very slow on my phone.
I could also rent a VPS and open an SSH tunnel or spawn a wireguard server on it, but it’s a bit expensive.
Maybe tailscale ?

Or is there a VPN provider like nordvpn, surfshark, proton etc. that allows multiple clients in the same virtual network ?

Tailscale. It will do exactly as you indicate. You can also nominate devices as exit nodes if you like but otherwise just a great vpn.

It’s free for up to 100 devices .

Cloud Connexa has a free VPN service for up to three connections on the same vpn.

Tailscale is your best option - Free tier supports 3 users & 100 devices.

Windows ↔ Linux ↔ Android works very well.

Also has Mullvad exit node support if you want an encrypted WG VPN tunnel as well.

I thought tailscale was similar to zerotier but it is actually performing much better. I’m still trying to figure out the firewalld configuration though ^^

edit: If anyone else is struggling with firewalld routing setup (it’s actually pretty straight forward)

Yeah, Tailscale is good for many applications, but has not performed well for connecting to Windows SMB shares. For that I’ve moved over to Twingate which works great–you just have to have a full time “connector” service running on the target network.

Thanks! Not sure I’ll be using cloud connexa, but at least I have a keyword to search.

Apparently, what I’m looking for is called a “cloud VPN”.

Yes, wireguard. But it needs to be hosted somewhere…

When did you last use it? I read about smb issues that have been corrected. I recently installed it on a Synology NAS and it’s worked flawlessly.

If you’re dead set on wireguard/openvpn instead of tailscale, just rent a VPS in any cloud provider. Linode is a favorite of mine, DigitalOcean is also great in my experience.

That’s great news. Probably November-December.
