All unsafe VPN services! [Small List w/ Sources]

Not Recommended VPN Services

  • I don’t want to comment on ExpressVPN and NordVPN. If you are using it, companies like these are so populer because of you. See Also
  • WindScribe VPN: Servers were not encrypted as they should have been allowing MITM attacks by authorities. Source
  • DoubleVPN: Servers, logs, and account info seized by law enforcement. Source
  • PureVPN: Forced to disclose information of one user to the FBI. Source
  • EarthVPN: User was arrested based on logs provider to the Dutch Polic because of a bomb hoax. Source
  • HideMyAss VPN: User was de-anonymized, and logs were provided to the FBI in a labeled “LulzSec fiasco”. Source
  • HolaVPN: Hola is harmful to the internet as a whole, and to its users in particular. You might know it as a free VPN or “unblocker”, but in reality it operates like a poorly secured botnet - with serious consequences. Source
  • Private Internet Access (PIA): Private Internet Access is a longstanding veteran in the VPN industry — but a lot has changed in the past few years. It was purchased by Kape with a history of infecting devices with malware, and the latest tests below reveal some shortcomings. Source
  • CyberGhost VPN: Most of these “review” websites ignore the fact that CyberGhost, Private Internet Access, and ZenMate are all owned by the same company, called Kape. Kape is an interesting business with a history of infecting devices with malware hidden in software bundles. Source
  • ZenMate: It will suffice to read the above paragraph.
  • Hotspot Shield VPN: Service that went through a rough patch a few years ago, being accused of unfair business practices and suffering a bug that leaked user data. Source

Friendly reminder

Using a VPN will not keep your browsing habits anonymous, nor will it add additional security to non-secure (HTTP) traffic. If you are looking for anonymity, you should use the Tor Browser instead of a VPN. Don’t replace good security practices with a VPN service. If you’re looking for additional privacy from your ISP, on a public Wi-Fi network, or while torrenting files, a VPN may be the solution for you.

Also you can build your own VPN service with VPS (for only monthly $5) See Also

Shoutout to Mullvad. Suckas dont even want to know your name or anything and so many options to pay.

For more and all sources: privacytools.io

There’s bunch of drama but the short version is that the PrivacyTools team left and now maintain the PrivacyGuides page (there’s all that happened linked on their front page);

Which is the site you should use. The owner was MIA for a long time, domain was going to expire, team left, owner came back and added crypto exhanges section to privacytools with most of them being affiliate links.

Use PrivacyGuides, they still have the same VPNs recommended.

EDIT: I believe /r/privacytoolsIO is also under PrivacyGuides’ control.

Might want to add Hola to the Not Recommended list? Known malware, sells your bandwidth to botnets.

The flavour of the month seems to be “surfshark”, is that just another NordVPN?

Also, Mozilla has a VPN now, I haven’t really heard much about it tho.

AirVPN should be mentioned. Been with them 10 years.

No recommendation for Torguard?

Add Giganews to the list of full-log vpn. First day of using it got slapped with DMCA and giganews telling me to knock it off. Fuuuuck that company.

Here is a statement by the Windscribe CEO addressing the issue: Link

Surfshark vpn seems to be popping up here and there/sponsored. Is it legit or safe?

Why didn’t you say anything about PIA if you talked about ExpressVPN and NordVPN. They all come under the “we’re not sure if they’re safe” category.

What about PIA? haven’t they successfully countered lawsuits even?

How does private internet access stack up?

How about cyberghost vpn? I have used it for 3 years without a hiccup

What about browsers with vpns like epic? Are they just a gimmick?

Ahh I have Proton lifetime and I‘m not even using it lol. Maybe I should.

Any opinions on CyberGhost?

What about SurfShark?

You mentioned something about ExpressVPN but the link you provided only talks about a (old) Nord hack. What gives? Why is express bad?

ProtonVPN: Limited free version available,

So a free VPN service that is not a scam does actually exist. I’ve always red that all of them basically sell your data, but this seems to be legit, but I saw a lot of complaints about its speeds. I’m definitely going to try it though.
