I tried setting up the VPN server on my Synology NAS but then realized that my internet connection is DS-Lite (IPv4 over IPv6) and therefore does not allow port forwarding. Now I’m looking for other alternatives to expose apps that I host on my NAS remotely (and actually Synology apps too).
I came across Cloudflare tunnels but am a complete noob when it comes to that stuff. It looks like it would do what I need it to do but I would need to buy a domain and I am not sure if that would also increase security on the native apps like Synology Drive and Photos.
Any advice, comments or other options for me to consider?
Thank you!
You don’t have to look any further than Tailscale. I have L2TP, OpenVPN, Synology VPN, and Tailscale running. I just came back from a business trip. Tailscale was all I needed. Setup is effortless. Even a noob can be running in 15 minutes.
Tailscale is quite nice, easy to set up, and has an official app in Package Center.
Tailscale and Cloudflare Argo tunnels are the only things I know of that are an alternative to VPNs. I haven’t worked with either.
You can connect the nas to a VPN on a cheap vps. The vps will be under your control, and you can do port forwarding.
Awesome, thank you so much.
I’ve heard of Tailscale but haven’t looked into it yet. Thanks for the recommendation.
Thank you, I just set it up. Super easy.
Tailscale, ZeroTier, Nebula etc
Thank you! I just set up Tailscale in 10 minutes. Super easy.
