Honestly I’m going nuts. Astrill, 360 VPN, Hotspot Shield etc etc nothing works.
Anyone got recommendations?
Astrill as well as every single VPN works perfectly fine on mac.
You are either not set as an admin, and thus not allowed to add a VPN profile, denying its request to create a VPN connection or your mac install is either very very old or fucked up.
Astrill is fine for me — better on the MacBook than on the tv.

Get 2 Clash based subscription, one as main, one ad reserve.
Shadow rocket is what you need. Add yousufbabu22 on wechat that’s who I use.
Open the settings in astrill and do a speed test. It will tell you which servers are working and fastest. You can save them and then you will be good for at least a couple of weeks. When the connection starts getting bad or failing, repeat. You will also probably find that the results are different in different places. The server that works best at home may be different from the best at your workplace.
You need to find the handful of servers that work from your connection. You cannot simply press the on switch and expect it to work, nor can you select any server and expect it to work. Astrill is probably the best balance of user friendliness and stability in China.
Also during “politically sensitive” times, like party meetings, even astrill will become unreliable, this usually occurs a couple times a year and lasts for 1-2 weeks at a time.
traditional VPN not work well in china, maybe you can find some china specifically vpn in fiverr, based on clash or v2ray.
10 years in China, I use wannaflix with Shadowrockets. VPNs are useless.
How did you connect? I have the Mac all downloaded but it won’t let me login. Works fine on phone though
