Aura Identity Theft Protection

I originally was looking into LifeLock, but all basic reviews point to that being overpriced and mediocre. Most YouTube reviews say that Aura is the company to use. I’ve seen many people on Reddit complaining about that however. Does anyone have any first hand experience with Aura? Is there something else you prefer instead? Just trying to make an educated decision here.

I fell for a phishing scam once. Luckily nothing really happened (they got the password for my uni email), but yeah, get something like aura if you did get your identity stolen

I’ve been using Aura for a few months and I generally like it. I see some of the other comments that ID theft protection is a scam. And yeah I didn’t really get much out of my Lifelock membership, and for a while I was just using CreditKarma to watch credit. But there are a bunch of things I like about Aura. The things I like:

- Credit Cards watcher – they tell me if weird charges happen across my accounts.

- Controls for Kids – I have my family and kids on there - and I can watch a bunch of stuff, and put privacy controls on my kids computers and phones to make sure nothing stupid happens.

I like Aura a lot because there are a lot of different features that tie into identity theft protection. Like the password manager, VPN, data broker, transaction monitoring… I could go on!

Has anyone had to use the insurance after an identity theft? Wondering how easy it is to deal with and if it actually works how it says.

ID theft protection is a scam. The likelihood of having your ID stolen is so small that they can easily underwrite the residual risk and make millions in the process of selling ‘feeling safe’ to the uninformed.

If in the U.S. and you are worried about ID theft, you can mitigate for a tiny bit of your time and $0. Set an initial fraud alert and renew it every year (that’s what Lifelock did in the early days, until they were called on it). Do it on the website of one of the 3 credit bureaus (Equifax, TransUnion or Experian). Only need to initiate at one of them, they are required to notify the others.

Any options available in Canada?

Identity protection is a waste of money. It doesn’t prevent identity theft. It is supposed to warm you whereby the person must take action to notify the company duped to open a fake account as well as the major credit bureaus. If you really worried just tell the major credit bureaus not to release your data. You’ll need to undo each time you apply for credit but how often do you do that? Identity theft low risk too. Utter waste money here.

Identity theft is very common. Also its about a lot more than people taking loans out in your name.

My ID was already stolen. I’ve had to call about like 5 different accounts (that I didn’t open) that are now in collections. I’m sick of it.

Personally my parents (very stupid thing to do) let their friends claim me on their taxes to help them out. They got into a fight and used my social to open stuff. I had to fight stuff on my credit when I turned 18. It is common. Don’t let people claim your kids on taxes either.

Yup. Don’t know what this comment is on about.

Yup someone in Modesto is living as me

Same. I called around and had notes placed on all my important financial accounts that someone has my SSN and just to be on the lookout for anything strange. One of them told me that in addition to freezing my credit and changing some passwords that I should also take my phone and computer to geek squad and have them run a 3rd party scan to make sure there’s no spyware. So, that’s where I’m at right now. Best of luck to us both.

Important Note: I also couldn’t freeze my credit because I had a student loan I was paying off from college so that wasn’t an option.
