This question is ungoogle-able apparently. I’m about to move from the US to another country. Can I set up a router-level VPN, tunnel back to the US, then connect to my workplace’s Azure VPN client with no issues? Aka will the VPN client itself allow me to connect?
The VPN will be set up at the router level so that no software on my PC will be aware of it.
Yes!!! it works like a dream. I use a router level vpn to show I’m in a major city, then have an address in that city and just say that’s where I live. Then connect to my work’s vpn. There is no difference. If you do this I recc having a backup. One time my vpn was down for maintenance all day so now I have a built in vpn with expressvpn, and a backup with nord that has openvpn client.
Sorry I didn’t see that comment – Yes!!! it works like a dream. I use a router level vpn to show I’m in a major city, then have an address in that city and just say that’s where I live. No problem! The main thing I use is the expressvpn aircove. It’s extremely easy to use, everything is integrated. I love it. I had a really hard time when I arrived in Latin America finding a router with OpenVPN Client, so that was a relief because I knew it would work. I haven’t heard of those but I think any wrt router with OpenVPN client should do the trick! I just started buying smaller brands that are openvpn for the backup so I don’t have anything super good. Also I wasn’t that worried with super high performance because I don’t play any FPS games or anything that needs insanely fast response times. My backup at the moment is a gl.inet which is a chinese brand I think. But again I think the big takeaway is once you get the router, test it before you move that it has openvpn client, and can establish the vpn connection. That was my big mistake. Also if you need MFA you can use Bluestacks to install any phone app and set a location that way.
You’re welcome! That’s awesome to hear! I have a router in front of my modem that splits my network in 2. 1 router for VPN and work and 1 mesh network for the house. My router has a Killswitch. You may want to look into your router, but I think every VPN service has it. So basically if the vpn goes out, your Internet drops. So that fixes that.
For your phone be careful. A lot of MFA requires gps to be turned on. So when you are Wi-Fi only test it by opening incognito, and googling what is my location? Location services uses a mix of things that isn’t just your network. If you run into this issue get a free app that spoofs your location, or BlueStacks. Good luck! I ended up going extreme with my set up. I have 2 routers, 2 vpns, backup Internet with Starlink, backup power with ecoflow. I’m in a developing country so reliability isn’t a thing, but there are great options and my job is safe
