Can't I just use ultrasurf in lieu of using a VPN?

I’m really new to this, but why not use ultrasurf? It’s free and it change your IP address. Using a VPN, you would have pay.

It comes down to a matter of trust for me. OpenVPN has source code out there that can be peer-reviewed. UltraSurf, to my knowledge, has never released their source code so you have no idea of what they’re doing behind your back.

Ultrasurf is more of an HTTP proxy than a VPN. Also they keep logs for I think a month or two and are based in the US. They probably block bittorrent traffic, but I can’t confirm this. You really shouldn’t use it for torrenting, like Tor, because people rely on this to bypass censorship and stuff, and torrenting wastes a lot of bandwidth.

Ever heard the phrase, you get what you pay for?

If a protocol’s source code isn’t openly available that throws up red flags for me, if something can’t be peer-reviewed then there’s no guarantee it’s secure/can’t easily be decrypted

I get very angry with people who torrent/stream while using networks like TOR, it’s a complete waste and stops people who really need the protection from being able to use the internet just because someone wants to move some files anonymously

There are VPN and seedbox providers for using the BitTorrent protocol anonymously

This, servers cost money to run and maintain. Nothing free is going to give you a truly safe and anonymous internet experiance
