I have a simple question. I have Kaspersky total security with basically all options/services/features activated.
I would like to know if Kaspersky scans automatically files downloaded from Chrome/Edge. If yes, how do I make sure it’s on and working? I actually have the same question about e-mail attachments from MS Office Outlook.
Because when I used McAfee in the past, when I downloaded a file from chrome, before I could open it, there was a McAfee banner inside chrome saying that the file was being scanned. During that, I wasn’t able to open the file.
Hello!
Yes it does. I believe it does this on-access (when you run it). You might notice after clicking a newly downloaded program it takes a while to open. During that time kaspersky is scanning it (you can see this in task manager).
I use Kaspersky Total Security and the normal thing is that it always checks automatic downloads from the browser, there have been several cases of kaspersky total security having blocked threats in automatic downloads on Edge after I enter malicious websites, if you think your Kaspersky is not working properly, test with EICAR as I said.
In Chrome, Edge and Firefox the common files like .exe are usually checked even before they are downloaded unless the size of the file is very large (I think) because Kaspersky does HTTPS scanning. It acts as the middleman between your browser and the PC. So it sees everything that goes on in and out of your browser. Kaspersky don’t support browsers like Brave. So its web protection won’t properly work in it. Kaspersky’s web protection is not system wide like some of its other competitors. This is something many users actually don’t know, so I’m just throwing it out here.
Then after the file is downloaded it will be checked against the signature & light heuristic and when you execute, it will be checked again with signature+heuristics+cloud.
Yes it uses Chromium of course but still Kaspersky don’t support it yet.
About being worried, I think it depends. I’m pretty sure (correct me if I’m wrong) that phishing protection doesn’t work at all in unsupported browsers. According to Kaspersky’s official site, other features including web protection doesn’t work either. You know, many people use Windows Defender which doesn’t have this features either but still remains safe. So I don’t really have proper answer to the question you asked.
