Does VPN drop when PC goes to sleep?

received a DMCA notice from my providor in my email this morning in regards to items that I was downloading last night while connected to PIA. Here is what I do:

Start PC, connect to PIA, then open my browser to test my IP, check if it’s secure, then I open the torrent program.
I have DNC lean protection and IPv6 leak protection enabled.

This seems like it would be secure, except with the possibility that PIA disconnected when my computer went to sleep last night.

Is this an issue for other users?

What PIA version? What OS? Do you want constant leak free VPN protection at all times? Do you want to torrent 24/7?

You will be first expected to have tried the latest version with all leak protection and killswitch enabled by default.

Everything goes down when your computer goes to sleep mode though, including your network connection. That’s what sleep mode does.

Otherwise, it wouldn’t be sleeping.

Also, if you’re torrenting something overnight, it’s best to disable any power saving settings like sleep or hibernate. Turning off the monitor is okay though.

Or, VPN your entire home LAN. Check your router’s specs and if it runs openVPN you’re good to go with some Walkthroughs.

Depending on your drivers Killers shitty Ethernet drivers allow you to block certain applications from a network interface. This allows a kill switch at the driver.

V82. Windows 10. I want leak protection during the times I torrent which might be once every few months for a few hours (overnight)

I didn’t have the killswitch enabled but will enable it now for sure.

I guess not everything does down on sleep mode, because for example when I leave the torrenting app running for a long time and the iMac goes automatically to sleep, the torrenting still goes on: when I wake it up, some files are complete or advanced.

There is a new version of PIA, the leak/killswitch should be enabled by default. In this case i suggest you get the latest PIA version, and find a torrent client that allows you to ‘bind’ it’s connection to the vpn(tap) adapter.

Maybe it just finishes and then goes into sleep mode? Because by industry definition, sleep mode means the system is only on standby, with nothing running.

/u/zimplezimon Great points! /u/alext72888 We’re sorry to hear about the trouble! ALWAYS use your killswitch when torrenting. But what has been said is true: please give our new client a go!
