Finally switched from Chrome to Firefox. What are some essential extensions you'd recommend?

Firefox Multi Account Container and Simple Tab Group. These 2 helped be a lot in organizing tabs in groups for particular work and multi account container simply makes different container where u can login in to your alt without having data shared across

The less extensions the better, you should not be going out of your way to find extensions, only install what you need. Extensions don’t have the same level of security backing as the main browser itself and therefore is a bit of a risk to use them, I’m not saying don’t use any, but just keep it minimal.

The best way to think about it is, the more extensions you have, the higher the chance for security and stability issues.

This isn’t a knock to Firefox or extension devs, it’s just true, the less the better.

Adaptive tab bar colours

I’ve got container tabs, Ublock Origin and NoScript for privacy, along with containers specific to certain sites and services (Tumblr, Pixiv, Amazon, Google, Reddit and Discord), Get RSS Feed, Container Tabs Sidebar, BitWarden, Downloads Sidebar, Notes Sidebar (need a better notes add on), OverbiteWX, Geminize, Fedishare and Tumblr share, Video Download Helper and Return Youtube Dislike

I like tree style tab personally

No more cookie banners:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/i-dont-care-about-cookies/

A little less doomscrolling:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/leechblock-ng/

Swapped from Opera GX recently, if anyone else also did and misses the RAM limit feature then the addon “Auto tab discard” achieves a similar result.

Despite saying “discard” (poor wording) the tab is just unloaded not closed.
Got a bunch of tabs right now and I’m only using 1.6GB currently.

Suggestions ? Yes !

I use the History AutoDelete addon to enable a powerful browseflow

If you remove search suggestions from the awesome bar in about:preferences first then use this addon to filter out search engines searches from your history, you will be able to navigate the web mostly without a search engine. It’s faster, and more ecological. Let me explain :

Now when you Ctrl + L into the tab, you will get results from your history, bookmarks and even open tabs. And the results are only a few Tab presses away, no need to move your hands off the keyboard. If you don’t like the results and want to launch a search anyways, well just press Enter instead and it will launch a search with the default search engine. What’s not to like ?

P.S: Almost forgot that they added some button whose usefulness is a bit dubious inside the results of the awesome bar making it well, a bit less awesome : You now have to tab twice to go through results. But fret not : - Go to about:config
To make the Tab key skip it, look up browser.urlbar.resultMenu.keyboardAccessible and set it to false
To disable it altogether, set browser.urlbar.resultMenu to false

P.P.S : Not exactly an extension but here is alternative UI and imho much better UI : https://github.com/black7375/Firefox-UI-Fix It’s quite easy to install, just use the command line in the readme.

P.P.P.S : Cool trick is to type % + space in the awesome bar to move around opened tabs, awesome You can also specifically look into bookmarks with * and history with ^

P.P.P.P.S : Are you a vim user/used to vim navigation ? Use Vimium + Firenvim. Or better imho, Tridactyl.

P.P.P.P.P : Ctrl + L, Ctrl + T, Ctrl + W and Ctrl + Alt + T are your best friends.

Firefox is amazing, you just have to tweak it a tiny bit

Asides from those already recommended: Old Reddit Redirect, Don’t Track Me Google (make google results go directly to the site instead of a Google tracking URL), and ClearURLs (remove tracking parameters from URLs)

Dark Reader can be life changing, LanguageTool is a great spelling/grammar checker, and i’ll always recommend BitWarden.

  • Augmented Steam
  • Facebook Container
  • Firefox Color
  • Load Reddit Images Directly
  • NoScript
  • Old Reddit Redirect
  • Reddit Enhancement Suite
  • Return YouTube Dislike
  • Tab Session Manager
  • uBlock Origin
  • View Image

uBO, Violentmonkey, Stylus

The Bypass Paywalls Extension. The first install is a bit manual, but it’ll automatically update after that.

If you’re the sort of person who has dozens of tabs open at any time, I’d highly highly recommend Sidebery https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/sidebery/

It adds a panel on the side where you can see your tabs on a vertical list so they’re not all fighting for space at the top. It’ll also indent tabs underneath the one they opened from so you can see a visual history of how you got to the page you’re looking at. And you can use separate panels to organise them, so for example I have 5 panels at the moment (fun and entertainment, coding projects, reading and research, job stuff, general), and you can set up rules to automatically move tabs to specific containers to help you keep things organised.

It took me a bit of time to get used to using vertical tabs, but it’s now absolutely essential to how I use Firefox and it’s one of the first plugins I get when if I do a new install for whatever reason.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/videospeed/

Remembers video speed on youtube (and everything else) without you having to reapply it every page. Also lets you speed up videos on sites that don’t have native time speeds in their UI.

Ublock origin. It actually works!!!
1Password or your password manager, don’t use any built in web browser password manager, they are not safe to use, I don’t recommend it.

Disable WebRTC
UBlock Origin
Malwarebytes
Dark Reader
NoScript

uBlock Origin + Bitwarden for me

Yeah. I don’t know if you need all that other nonsense.

I use Ublock Origin.
I LOVE

Export Tabs URLs

Save a list of all open tabs into a text file.Export Tabs URLs

I would say, to start?

Ublock Origin (No privacy badger: iirc, that is redundant now) The best adblocker.

Reddit Enhancement Suite

Sponsorblock Skips baked in sponsorships and such on youtube.

Firefox Multi-Account Containers Allows you to partition cookies and such. You can log into websites on one container w/o it affecting the others whatsoever.

Additional extensions I would recommend:

Clear URLs This, from what I can tell, is one of the only extensions which still does one thing better than UBO. However, this might have changed since I last checked.

Firefox Color Useful for basic customization (color) for the firefox UI.

Dark Reader Dark mode.

Magnolia1234’s Bypass Paywalls Clean (no link). It does what it says.

Imo, outside of Ublock Origin, I don’t believe there is any single extension which has been more useful than multi account containers. It legitimately makes nearly everything magnitudes easier the second you use more than 1 email account.
