So after some tinkering I’ve mostly got my Xbox One X playing DTS HD files ok, and have fixed the audio lag I was having. But in some parts I’ve noticed that if there’s a loud noise, bright flash or quick movement (camera flashes in Harry Potter), Dave Bautista lunging at Ryan Gosling in Blade Runner 2049… the entire screen flickers, goes pixellated and loses sound for a split second.
Why would that happen? Has anybody else ever had that? The rest of the film plays fine, and it doesn’t do it on the source file on the computer. If I knock it down to a lower quality (I think it’s 20mbps or whatever the next setting down is) it plays fine, but obviously not as sharp as the original and it goes to basic 5.1
There’s a lot of possibilities as to why this is happening from a possible network issue to dts may not be working correctly at all so let’s start with a couple of questions…
What devices are you using and how are they connected? Tv model, server specs, hdmi, wifi vs ethernet, etc.
Can you post a screenshot of your plex dashboard while playing the file?
Post a screenshot of the details of the test file.
So the Mac mini is on wifi, is the connection using the 5Ghz band? Is plex running natively not in docker desktop? What software are you using to mount the HDD in mac?
Hi! Thanks for replying. I was hoping it would be an easy “yes this happens because…” but not to be I guess
Server is a 2018 Mac Mini with USB Hard Drive. Wifi transmits to the router downstairs. Xbox One X hard wired into the router. HDMI goes straight into the DTS HD/True HD compatible amp/receiver. And then on to the TV.
Can’t do a dashboard pic right now but it was direct playing as I remember from last time I looked.
Yes the Mac is on the local 5Ghz network. Plex is just running on the Mac normally (it’s my work computer), and the hard drive is… just plugged in? (Not sure what you mean by what software to mount it)
We you get a chance post the dashboard. Is the work computer using a VPN?
Yes using Proton VPN as I’m in the UK and it’s the only way to safely download. I’ll try to get a dashboard screenshot tomorrow
Are you shutting off the VPN when trying to play your content?
I was under the impression that doesn’t make a difference when only on the local network (IE same WIFI in the house) - is that not right?
The VPN literally takes you off of your home network and puts you on your work network. That’s the point of the VPN. Shut it off especially since your work can see you playing plex and using their bandwidth.
No no I’m self employed I work from home lol. It’s literally my work computer at home. My computer.
Still the VPN moves that work computer to whatever server is hosting the VPN. No longer is your home IP assigned to the computer and you go from being local to now being remote
Huh. Clearly I need to look into it more. I assumed it did that for any outgoing traffic, so basically going on the internet etc. But anything between computers on the same Wifi within the house are still classed as being local, as they’re literally on the same Wifi.
So you’re saying I’ve got this wrong, yeah?
Yes a VPN stands for virtual PRIVATE network. In very basic terms… If you’re a client your computer joins someone else’s server. If you’re hosting a server, clients join you.
I’m curious how I’m able to use Plex then on my Xbox or phone if that’s the case, as I have remote access turned off. What you’re saying is that it should think any other computer in my house is on a different network. Which it clearly doesn’t.
Or you can keep the VPN on I guess. Best of luck
