Guys… Jayski is blocked on my school chromebook
Random story time, because I’m getting to that ripe age of OLD and like reminiscing on the good ol’ days.
tl:dr senior year we used thumbdrives to do whatever we wanted on school computers. Program is still around, however I wouldn’t trust it, but then again it’s the school’s Chromebook so fuck 'em.
Back in like 2011-2012 ish me and the boys found a program you could load onto a flash drive, that acted like a it’s own internet browser, completely bypassing any and all firewalls the school had. (looking into it now, it appears it’s still around, marketed as a mobile VPN. That was foreign to us at the time, so maybe thats all it was the whole time?)
Normally you’d go to those wacky proxy sites like ihateschool or whatever just to be able to use Facebook on the school computers, but it would look like the basic mobile layout (at the time, mobile Facebook wasn’t that big of a thing, essentially just a white screen with plain text of who posted, pictures wouldn’t load). Anything past that, it was nearly useless. This program, however, would load Facebook like normal. Ebay? MySpace? The sites your momma warned you about and your dad used but thought you didn’t know out about? Totally fine. I was big into Runescape at the time, and we’d be playing that or other games in class (shout out FunOrb, I miss Arcanists)
It was also our first look into that thing of things multiplying out of hand. Within 2-3 weeks EVERYONE at school had a thumbdrive plugged into the computer they were using. We had people asking us if we wanted the program, even though we were the ones that brought it into school. The next year (allegedly, as we were all out of there) they put a ban on thumbdrives because it was STILL such a huge thing to have.
Wooooooof.
Fun fact from an aging fan (who denies it):
When I was in high school, I used Jayski a lot for the paint schemes pages, and news. I had a teacher that hated that, and had them block it. (This was in the days of desktop computer labs and such) It never interferred with my school work, never did it during ‘class time’ (unless I finished my work early) and had good grades. Anyways, one of my computer literate friends found a proxy to use, so I could get back on it. One day I was writing race results in my notebook (idk why I needed to keep track in a notebook) same teacher saw it, went ape shit and sent me to the principal. While I was down there, another one of my teachers (who I was cool with) saw me, and asked why (as it was out of the norm for me). She went to the meeting with the principal with me, let the principal hear the story, let the principal explain how I broke the rules, and stepped in. She told the principal that I showed a true passion for NASCAR (Along with Hockey), and that I was never in any trouble, never had bad grades, never put off my school work, and said that part of the point of educating kids in to point them towards a future. Her point was what if I wanted to pursue a career in the NASCAR Industry? Or Broadcasting (which I did try)? Or what if I wanted to go in to sports in general? Killing my passion would do nothing to change what I did in school, except for the worst, and was just overkill. Shortly after, they unblocked Jayski, the NHL Sites I used, and that teacher made sure to let me know if I ever wanted to go to her classroom when I wasn’t busy, and work on ‘passion projects’ her door was always open. So far life hasn’t panned out to where that was a career, however it gave me the chance to explore things, and more importantly the confidence to try to build on things I loved.
Sorry for the old person story time, this post just really resonated with me, and I was hoping it may with you or other redditors.
Racing-reference.info
Hell, half the sites I needed to use for schoolwork was blocked on those too
Same. Like seriously, why? Literally just photos and stats. If they took one look at it, they would see there’s nothing wrong with it. If I really need to find a statistic, I can use racing reference, but it just pisses me off
I’m glad it’s not blocked at my school
No that’s fucking bs
Racing reference was blocked at my previous school i was so sad
Yeah reminds me of Diecast charv is also blocked (I was just gonna look on there because I was bored or looking for a profile picture I think)
Omg. Jayski is still a thing? I remember back in like 02-03 showing my dad this “new website I found on the internet”. Also had JoeCartoon.com and funny.com as windows at the time
I definitely remember using the proxy sites lol. Someone would discover a new one and it would spread like wildfire through the school until it was blocked. We also discovered that if you translate a site through babelfish it would avoid the filters. That one was never blocked.
I’m not reading that, but congratulations! Or I’m sorry that happened.
It took like 20 seconds to read… how cooked is your brain
Welcome to 10 years ago when this joke popular
