I haven’t set up a subscription through VPN, as I switch anyway and don’t usually have more than one streaming service active (except Spotify).
That being said, I use it to circumvent the geoblocking of Channel 4 (because of “Big Mood” and “The Great”).
I did once accidentally open Netflix while in a British VPN and it was okay. My viewing history was on, but less subtitles (e.g. Derry Girls only had English subtitles, while with a Swiss VPN there’s a whole list). So I’d assume that the international versions might generally have most subtitles outside of English.
Tip: Besides public IP, some services will look into your WiFi settings as a secondary geolocking mechanism. Disabling WiFi and connecting through a wired lan interface defeats this.
Thanks everyone for your honest answers. After reading through them and looked up some alternatives i will try gamsgo. I created an account and now using netflix for 4.- per month. Day 1 and its working. i signed up for three months (minimum). lets see how this works out.
just watch shows and movies on „alternative“ sites and stop paying stupid companies unnecessary money just so
you have to open another subscription on an other platform and then pay money for an
VPN too, switzerland is actually pretty chill with „alternative“ methods aslong its used for personal reasons.
(it’s legal to download media for personal use)
In the end you are already thinking to screw the system with the vpn, why not go further?
P.S. for english content filelist may be ok, but you need an invite
Can you otherwise use your card worldwide? I can pay my US netflix with no issue for example, but first had to allow worldwide transactions with my card.
Keyword being download, it is illegal to upload pirated media. Since most public places require you to download and simultaneously upload (seed) which makes most piracy illegal here. You can of course join private trackers that don’t require you to upload but they are usually invite only, have a monthly fee and a smaller selection of niche content.
Not only is it legal, I think it’s also totally morally legit.
I am perfectly willing to pay for media but I’m not gonna bend over backwards to route my data through a sketchy third party to do so!
If media companies want my money they’ll have to come and sell me their damn media on the Swiss market.
At least nowadays for films there are several web services where you can pay per view e.g. cinefile.ch. So if I wanna watch a film I’ll usually quickly check and often it’s available on one of those.
I do this with Chromecast + NordVPN for my TV and it works fine. Same with all the other streaming services in the US. With mobile or on a pad, all you need is NordVPN.
