How can I troubleshoot an issue where my corporate VPN keeps disconnecting every few minutes but only some days? My coworkers all have a solid connection. Mine is solid about 1-2 days of the week

It’s extremely annoying because I use RDP to connect to my work PC from my personal Mac. We use a 2FA app to log into our work PC and we also use a 2FA app to authenticate to the corporate VPN. So every single time my connection drops I have to initiate the connection to VPN, then I have to unlock my phone, open an app, authenticate with 2FA, then I have to wait for RDP to reconnect wait for the login screen, then I have to use the 2FA app on my phone again to log into Windows.

This happens about every 5-10 minutes… but only some days, and from what I can tell it’s random. Most days I can keep the connection for as long as I want, I’ve actually forgotten it connected for 48+ hours last week.

When I’m having connectivity issues, I’ll message my coworkers and they’ll let me know that they’ve had a solid connection.

This started being an issue about 2 months ago I think.

This happens whether my laptop is hardwired to the network or connected with wifi.

My equipment:

  • Unifi Dream Machine Special Edition
  • Unifi U6 Pro APs
  • M1 Max MacBook Pro macOS 14.3

I’m using the macOS built in VPN client to connect to our IKEv2 connection. Our VPN connection is to a Azure WestUS2 network which connects to our corporate network.

I have municipal gigabit fiber 1G up and 1G down, it’s been steady.

My question is how can I troubleshoot this so I can ask for help from my IT department? Or so I can contact my home ISP?

Have you looked at the Internet Health graph on your UDM to see if there are any latency issues showing up that coincide with your disconnections.

Yeah, nothing alarming. I’ve been having disconnections all day today every 5-10 mins.

Just out of curiosity, are you running a strict IPv4 setup or do you also have IPv6 running?

We have an issue with Verizon Fios sometimes where the IPv6 implementation is not perfect and we get weird things like disconnects and slower speeds.

Just try turning off IPv6 if you happen to have it on.

Good advice here, another one that often gets overlooked is power saving/battery power. Make sure that your machine isn’t throttling your NIC or connection and causing problems.

Yeah, it’s off
