How common is it for mainland Chinese crossing the firewall to go on Dcard and PTT? Have you ever used them?
Never heard of Dcard or PTT.
There are plenty of vpn users, but those two are very very limited.
Given some unofficial data, there are tens of million of Chinese have VPN.
But normally they use Youtube, twitter and etc. not ptt.
There are tons of them crossing to D card, and PTT, they usually just use simple simplified Chinese to traditional Chinese conversion to hide their identity, but the slang and tone of languages usually are dead give away that they are not Taiwanese

I often use these as a channel to observe Taiwanese people. I have observed several points: First, Taiwanese people do have “small happiness”. When I see the topics discussed by Taiwanese people, on the one hand, I feel that such small things do not need to be discussed, and on the other hand, I feel that life is actually not bad if you only need to worry about such small things. Second, Taiwanese people love to tell dirty jokes. Boys like to make explicit sexual harassment remarks to all pretty girls, while girls often act as if they don’t care. This is not only unimaginable in the US, but also rare in China. Third, the differences between political parties in Taiwan are very serious, and their supporters attack each other on the Internet. This enthusiasm of ordinary people for participating in politics is relatively rare in most democratic countries. Fourth, due to China’s military threats, Taiwanese people have developed racist tendencies towards Chinese people. For example, they call Chinese people “Zhina”, Chinese words is “Zhiyu”. To some extent, it is understandable, but it feels ironic that the concept “Zhina” created by the Japanese includes Taiwan.

Less language barrier doesn’t mean the content is interesting.
