Title. Just wondering, since there is either an interview or some kind of invite needed, so I should be fine without a VPN, correct?
Right. Barely anyone bothers with a VPN, especially on the more private sites. If you’re using IPT, or a similar site where you can purchase an invite, you may want to consider still using a VPN, but even then the chances of getting a copyright notice are way, way lower than that of a public tracker.
Your best bet is to get a seedbox, download everything to the seedbox and then download from the seedbox over SFTP which is encrypted. That saved you from any possibility of getting copyright notices and gives you more bandwidth to seed if you don’t have all that great at home.
yes, you will be fine. been using private trackers without a vpn for many many years
Nothing’s guaranteed safe about breaking copyright violations; but on another note some trackers don’t allow and will ban you for using vpn.
Private trackers that require interviews and vetting, are generally safe. Ones that you can buy into, make sure you don’t use the same email address/alias and password, IPT for example. Some will allow you to use a VPN, others will not. If you have the $5 a month, there is no reason you can’t get a seedbox, if you’re that paranoid. If you’re in the states, then why take a chance? Check to see what the site allows before you do anything. Read the FAQ, and the wiki, and read the forums as everything you are allowed to do will be stated in there. If you’re still unsure, make a post in the help forum on the tracker in question and ask your “stupid question” and someone will get back to you with the answer you require. Do NOT post it in here as you will not get the answer you need.
I got a copyright notice this year after 9 years on IPT. Not safe. I’m using private internet access VPN now
It’s at least a lot more safer than using a public tracker if that helps.
Plenty of people do, I don’t know if I could honestly recommend it with how cheap and easy VPNs are.
if you value true security, privacy. Use a vpn. Or get a seedbox and use reverse ssh and proxy your browser through that or something. Don’t give our your true IP to anyone or any tracker. You don’t know any of those people on the other end of the connection. Why would you trust them?
Just wanna be another voice for seedboxes. Recently got one and I won’t look back. Amazing speeds on private trackers and you can upload to the extent that you never get a bad ratio. Sure, it costs me 10 pounds a month but think of all the money you save on content. One HBO dvd set costs more than that.
Just force encryption in your torrent client.
Do copyright notices still come to people (even if rarely) on private trackers, or is it more of an issue of someone leaking / hacking peer lists, or something along those lines?
This is what I do. I got hit even through a proxy, which was set by my vpn provider. Seed box cost a bit more but I have had zero hassle since. I download the torrent file directly still with no vpn, then just upload that to the seedbox and let it do the rest. In the total open I am only taking the torrent file. Everything is has the seedbox in between.
download from the seedbox over SFTP which is encrypted
I suggest using FTPS instead, it’s faster than SFTP.
if the site ever gets raided then LE will have your IP
Which is why you have to use a VPN that doesn’t keep logs. No logs = nothing to raid for.
IPt barely qualifies as a private tracker
I suppose it does, but do people still get copyright notices, just less often than on public trackers? Or do the copyright notices only come when the site is compromised or something like that?
what private trackers do you use ?
Depends. What tracker?
