I am contemplating getting Proton Unlimited and stop subscribing to both Proton Email + Mullvad VPN. I really don’t want to switch and only then find out the Mac application is bad. I read several posts on this subreddit from about a year ago saying it was quite buggy etc.
I am on it now, and it works much better than my last VPN, on a MacBook Air pre-M1. There are fewer crashes, which is the reason why I plunked down the money after testing on the free mode.
I use it with Brave at work, where my old VPN couldn’t overcome the firewalls, and it consistently jumps over the firewalls. With Safari it seems to work well. No problems with Transmission either.
I do have problems with sending Messages, but my iPhone works as a backup on those.
I would say to get it.
Not at all.
Connecting to the different ProtonVPN regional servers is broken. You can only connect to one, then you have to relaunch the app to choose another.
But even after connecting to a ProtonVPN regional server, not a single website on the Internet loads. Not Google, not Bing, not Yahoo, not even the Proton UserVoice support forum or the Proton homepage.
My only gripe is the “Allow Local Connections” option not allowing connections to other local subnets other than the one you are currently connected to. Having a split tunneling option like in the Windows version where you can define what to exempt from the VPN would make the app perfect. Other than that, it runs fine on my M2 Air.
you can test the VPN app yourself. You can use free subscription. Premium subscription has higher speed and some extra feature. but there is no difference in bugs in free and premium subscription.

I currently use the protonVPN app on the macOS, let me tell you how I feel.
System info:macOS 13.0 Intel
Software info:protonVPN 3.0.4
Advantage:So far, I haven’t encountered any bugs or crashes. It’s stable. I run it 24 hours a day.
Weaknesses, or features that need improvement and missing features:
1、App does not support port forwarding on macOS
2、No customDNS
3、No Split Tunnel
4、I have experienced several network outages, but I am not sure whether it is because of the server or the app
Overall, I am satisfied. Because I actually care more about the quality of the server than the functionality of the app. Overall, proton VPN servers are of good quality, with excellent ping and speed.
For some reason, after switching a server, there is for like 5 minutes “DNS_PROBE_POSSIBLE” error in Brave. I thought it was because of Stealth (because while using stealth after waking up from sleep I had to disconnect and reconnect). But with wireguard this issue is happening only after switching a server.
Another issue I find is for some reason some websites are broken. Especially bybit.com can’t log in. If I log in without a VPN and then use VPN somehow I’m logged out. But when I turn off ProtonVPN I’m again magically logged in after refreshing website.
I’m on Ventura.
But beside this it works fine.
I have both an M1 Macbook Pro and an x86 Macbook Pro and I’ve had zero issues. Only been using the product for a few months though.
perfect, thanks for sharing!
thanks for sharing your experience!
My mac has the smart protocol option, no?
I see, seems like it should be okay for my use case since most people report it runs fine on an Apple Silicon mac
I have the same computer and also have had 0 issues
