I am using my VPN on a laptop that i bring between home and school. I want to stay protected as much as i can, but when i connect to a server i cannot connect. This is because it thinks im on my home ip. My school IP is different from my home IP of course. How can the VPN think im on my school IP? I am sorry for my bad english as I am from Mexico. I am also new to the VPN scene too.
The changed IP shouldnt be a problem, but it’s probably your school blocking VPN connections. I think in the pro version, there’s a stealth option, but I’m not sure.
No it’s because you’re school does packet inspection and blocks VPNs, proxies are the only solution
Posiblemente tu escuela haya bloqueado las IP de ProtonVPN. Dónde es dónde no te puedes conectar? Casa o escuela?
Assuming you are using an OpenVPN tunnel so that your client (laptop) connects to your home router: you want your laptop to get its public IP address from the VPN provider set on your router (Proton), not from your home ISP?
If that’s your question,

this is happening because your OpenVPN server creates a NAT (local IP range) different from your home network so your VPN provider settings on your router don’t see your laptop on the home network

the solution depends on what kind of router you have. If compatible with OpenWRT or Merlin for Asus routers then it’s possible to route your openvpn remote clients traffic to be visible by your vpn provider config. Here is how with Merlin and IP tables. It needs a user script on top of mappibg your OpenVPN server NAT IP range to your VPN Provoder config in Merlin’s VPN Director (I believe OpenWRT allow to do that via UI): openvpn server and client question | SNBForums
