Inconsistent success with ExpressVPN and OpenWrt

Wondering someone could help me with my VPN setup please. I have a Vodafone router with inbuilt L2TP client functionality. I also have a GL.inet MT300A running OpenWrt with OpenVPN and PPTP functionality. The ExpressVPN works perfectly for Netflix and everything else on the Vodafone router on L2TP but I want to dedicate the VPN to the MT300A so I don’t have to route everything in my house through the VPN. It connects on OpenVPN and PPTP but each time Netflix picks up the fact that I am using a VPN and provides the unblocked/proxy error.

What am I missing? All help appreciated!

You need to connect to a server that does unblock Netflix. Ask expressvpn for help on their chat, you’ll get a much faster reply than here. Plus it’s their service so they should know how to fix it

Edit: I think the first thing anyone who has a paid subscription should do when something goes wrong is ask their vpn provider for help as they’ll be the most knowledgeable and most qualified to help

Edit 2: To answer your question, OP, it’s not that your setup is wrong, it’s just the server IP that your connecting to doesn’t work with Netflix. So you need to ask expressvpn which server does work

Hi thanks for getting back to me. I think I needed to make this clearer in my text. I’m using the same VPN server for all three connections this is what’s confusing me. Do you think it’s some sort of DNS issue or does VPN automatically rule this out? Or could it be the placement of the Gl.inet router behind the Vodafone one?

Edit: and to confirm the server works when done on the Vodafone Router.

Here are some things to check:

  • make sure you only have the vpn running on the router you want to use
  • setup everything, and check your up address here: whatsmyipaddress.com to make sure you are using the vpn
  • compare that IP with the one you get when Netflix works. Is it the same? If it’s different, it’s possible that the servers they use for OpenVPN, l2tp and pptp are different from each other. Confirm that by opening the openvpn file in notepad and checking the server url. Compare that to what you are using on the new router. If they are different, then that’s likely the issue. One works with Netflix, the other doesn’t
  • DNS is not an issue. Netflix doesn’t care about your dns servers. That’s just for SmartDNS services.

Yes so the OpenVPN server IP is different but the others are the same!.. I’ll try again tonight and keep you posted. Thanks.

In that case maybe try pptp instead of openvpn

Also try Netflix in browser first before testing in app. Less chance of it messing up
