Is mullvad good enough just for torrenting?

New to VPNs and I’ve never had one before

I’ve done a bit of googling and there’s so many choices, but a lot of them have features I’m just not that interested in and at prices I’m not really wanting to consistently pay when I’m only interested in downloading content semi regularly on an old android phone to transfer to my other devices later

I’ve heard good things about mullvane and they’re at the right price point for my use case, but I’m curious if I need to do any further digging for my intended purposes

Sorry, I know this kind of question has to be the most commonly asked one, but info on this topic getting outdated so quickly makes Google less useful than it usually is. Thanks!

So the general consensus I’m getting here is that Mullvad is a good company, but the removal of port forwarding affects speeds and torrent availability, so the other good options would be Airvpn or proton. That sound about right?

It’s a good idea to have a port forward for your torrent client in order to maximise speed/seeders, unfortunately Mullvad had to remove this feature a couple months back so I’d suggest checking out ProtonVPN or AirVPN

i just switched to it – i got 2 love letters from spectrum while using nord, and i’m kinda pissed.

so if i’m doing this right – i have a paid account, there’s a green lock in the menu bar, so that should be protecting all traffic in and out right, including my torrent client [transmission on mac]?

I have 1Gbps internet, the best upload and download speed i could achieve was through iVPN. I tried every other popular vpn but none could saturat my internet and nor iVPN has. It just goes up to 300-500 mbps

Mullvad is a good option for you. I’m sure you’ll be able to determine if it works well in a short amount of time, they offer a refund if you’re not happy too.

I use Mullvad for privacy purposes and Nord for torrenting. Nord has split tunneling which allows me to operate my Plex server while simultaneously torrenting using qbittorret

i have both.
but i noticed that protonvpn is much faster than mullvad, maybe because of the Port Forwarding.

It will still work for torrenting but not as well as one with port forwarding. I used Mullvad for torrenting for a couple of years and it was only when they announced they were removing port forwarding that I tried using it with a different provider . But I do think they are one of the most trustworthy VPN providers out there so I think they’re still worth checking out.

AirVPN is way better. Check servers near you-they have a list and it shows load & server capacity.

It also supports port fowarding-still! Up to 5 ports. Shits great, srsly. If NE united states, they just upgraded Haedus server. It’s a fuckin 20gbit fibre backbone now! Shits hardly ever over 5000mbps in use though.

Sometimes I’ll pop on the mofo and torrent a bunch of bullshit just for the lulz-I have a 500MBPS connection and can max it out w/AirVPN…doesn’t put much of a dent in Haedus though.

Strongly suggest using it with WireGuard. Bind qbit to the VPNs net adapter. Setup port fowarding with airvpn, then enter that fowarded port # into qbit port settings. disable upnp!

I’m a newbie to this… What’s port forwarding? Sorry lol

What alternatives do you suggest ?

Yes, speeds suck without PF, especially with small swarms. I’m on PIA, so that’s another - less popular - option

I’m thinking about buying a month and giving it a try just because I love their straightforward business model. “Just pay us 5 bucks a month and we think you’ll love the product and stay with us, but you can leave any time without worrying about paying for months you won’t use”

I’m new to the VPN world, but that kind of sales pitch just screams “we have confidence in our product” rather than charging higher for short term use in hopes of selling long term packages, which sounds more like they’re trying to increase retention in hopes you’ll stick with the familiar

Simply port forwarding allows users to connect to each other, if the seeder(s) are port-forwarded they can connect to everybody no matter if they are connectable or not trying to download the content, which is crucial if they are the last seeder left. Now if the seeder(s) aren’t port forwarded that means that only connectable people (the ones who port-forwarded) can download the content and the ones that havent port-fowarded are stuck unable to connect.

From Airvpn’s site:

https://airvpn.org/faq/port\_forwarding/

PIA has been good for me so far. I’m using WireGuard connected to a nearby server with port forwarding and can saturate my 500Mbps connection. No trouble connecting to peers.

Yeah honestly I’ve been very satisfied for many years. IVPN and Proton are okay, but they are far more expensive.
