Is there a difference between using 1.1.1.1 app and changing Private DNS for Android?

I have some battery issues recently with the 1.1.1.1 app and I had to disable it. I am looking for alternatives. Can I achieve the same function of using the app if I just update the Private DNS setting with 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com in my Android?

The 1.1.1.1 App also includes the Cloudflare “Warp” VPN in addition to encrypting your DNS traffic. But if you’re just concerned about DNS privacy, you pretty much get the same results as the app when manually setting Android’s private DNS options.

You may want to check out https://nextdns.io. You can do DNS over TLS from your phone as well as your home network.

I never had an Android, but as far as I’ve read only version 9 supports DoH (cellular/WiFi) natively. My dad has a driod and I’ve installed a 5mb (Open Source) app that pretty much works the same as every other (loopback over a local VPN). Works fine on a mid-range phone used by a 70yo that only does pretty basic chores on its phone. You can check it out, but of course YMMV. There’s a subedit and a GitHub project (I’m not affiliated in any way to the app) if you want to read before try it.

Best!

Warp is only if I get through the waitlist right? I think I have been stuck at 70000 for some time.

Very cool, I didnt know this existed, always thought 1.1.1.1 is the only one of its kind.

Before settling at Intra app (because its Open Source) I used Blockada DNS Changer. I checked others but either needed root access or were too sketchy. You should look for alternatives as well, but Blockada gave me the most similar experience to DNSCloak which is what I use for iOS.

And regarding what /u/diglocalhost said about your concerns… if only securing your DNS queries is needed, then I really recommend that you read on DNSCrypt. Currently using dnscrypt-proxy (the guts behind DNSCloak) in macOS with lovely results.

Have a good one! (again, not affiliated with anyone)
