Hi, I’m relatively new to pirating, but I am aware of needing to use a VPN and stuff when torrenting or just to be safe in general when pirating. My question is in the title; once you install something from FitGirl (I use the direct downloads), do you need to continue using a VPN to use the application? I also left another question in the title which is do you need a VPN for DDL’s at all. I use incognito tab but I don’t know if that is enough. Thank you for your help!

Nope. Block the appropriate .exe in your firewall and you should be fine.

DDL’s are not routinely monitored so you wont normally need a vpn.
This does not mean that DDL’s are completely safe just more expensive to get a court order to monitor it, as it requires more intrusive monitoring unlike the passive monitoring of torrents, which means normal copyright troll types wont bother with it.
Yes use a vpn. Depending on your isp, they may do what’s called “deep packet inspection” so you’ll also need a dns service as well. I use Cloudflare’s (1.1.1.1). All you need to do for that is change default dns settings. There’s loads of guides for this so I won’t explain here. You can see if it works by going to dnsleaktest.com and seeing if your isp is the dns found or cloudflare.
In short: yes, also dns matters
If you don’t firewall the game exe you may want to run a VPN while playing the game.
It’s possible for your IP address to get exposed when games log on to publisher servers to send telemetry. That’s something games may or may not do and a crack will not necessarily prevent it.
It’s pretty rare for complaints to get generated from games phoning home, but I know Microsoft has done it before with their big name titles.
You generally don’t have to be concerned about letters from your ISP when using direct download. The protocol used there is encrypted and fairly private. Not the case for torrents which are public and exposed.
Running incognito mode makes no difference unless you are concerned with data stored locally, for example if your computer gets seized for an investigation. But then you probably have bigger problems than a few copyright violations.
