ISP still blocks sites after connecting to VPN

I woke up this morning to find that my ISP has introduced ‘adult filters’ on my ISP - I rent my place so I’m guessing my landlord was sent a letter and either agreed or didn’t bother to do anything about it. I’ve contacted her about it.

Anyway, in the meantime I thought I’d use my VPN to connect to the sites that have been blocked (interestingly, porn sites have not been blocked but dating sites have). However, I’ve noticed that when I enable my VPN, connections to the dating sites still fail.

How is this possible? I assumed once I connected to my VPN provider, all requests would be handled by them and the ISP would not be able to filter them out.

Go to this site when connected to your VPN. It will tell you what DNS servers you are using.

What DNS are you using? The ISPs?

Not enough info to help. I have a suspicion that your setup is wrong.

Thanks. I’m at work now, but I’ll try it when I get home.

The VPN I use has its own DNS servers and says all lookups are performed through them.

I’m using quite a commercial VPN setup (are we allowed to name names here?) so it’s basically a case of selecting which country you want to route through and clicking it on.

The VPN application loads on startup and is set to automatically connect. It’s possible that I loaded my browser before it had finished connecting, but I think it’s unlikely. I’ll keep this in mind though, thanks.

it shouldn’t be that easy. What OS, client, firewall, killswitch, browser, software are u using? You need to be waaaaaay more specific if you want advice.

The other answers are right, ur DNS is probably being pulled from your ISP

I understand. The leading cause does seem to be DNS issues. Thanks for your help – I’ll come back with extra information if I need further advice.

Fair enough. Best of luck!
