I recently switched from ExpressVPN. I use an old Win 10 desktop connected to my TV, and connect to it from my main Win10 desktop using TeamViewer direct IP remote connect. I connect to the remote computer and log in, I then connect to a VPN server and the TeamViewer connection drops. I need to reconnect to the remote computer, which is a pain. I didn’t have this issue using ExpressVPN. Any ideas? Thanks!
Not sure I totally follow, I use TeamvWewer everyday all day, it’s literally my go to tool for work. I have used it on Windows 10 and more recently 11 without any issue. I connect to the VPN as my PC boots and then I connect to TeamViewer without issue. Now if I change VPN server for some reason, then the TeamViewer connection will drop for about 10 seconds and then recover without issue.
The only different I can see is that you mentioned “direct IP remote connect” which I am unsure of. I connect to my work machines using their Teamviewer ID.
1.- You can use split tunneling for to exclude teamviewer from VPN, because once you’re connected to VPN you’re not able to see your local network (you can in case it’s split tunneling).
2.- you can also try to configure Remote Desktop (RDS) in case your have Windows Pro Versions (just configure the remote machine RDS to accept connections and which user can connect) also you need to split tunneling or connect to local machine before start your vpn.
Note: if your connecting to a windows computer (locally or through VPN) you will have better performance using RDS (only available for Windows Pro/Server/Ultimate) even if you’re connecting from Mac > Windows
I contacted support on this issue. Their solution was to disable the Kill Switch. This resolved it, but I’m reluctant to run VPN without it. ExpressVPN Kill Switch never gave me any issues. I stated the same in my reply to them.
Thanks. Yes, it’s disabled, and I can connect to attached network drives on it. Ping also works. It’s just the initial VPN server connect that drops the connection between my TeamViewer client and the remote pc running vpn.
Thanks for the reply! Sorry it was confusing. In TeamViewer I enter the IP address of the remote instead of the TeamViewer ID, because the computer is on my local network. It’s much faster than using the web to access the remote. My current work around is to run the VPN on the remote all the time, But there are times when I don’t want to. I don’t run VPN on my main PC, unless I have a reason to.
Hi, thanks for the reply!
For the first point, I tried that.
For the second, while my computer connected to the TV (running VPN) is W10 Pro, my main computer I’m managing it from is W10 home.
What Nord Support said was to disable the Kill Switch. This does the trick, but I’d rather have it enabled. ExpressVPN never gave me any issues with it’s Kill Switch.
