Mullvad killed my PC

I had mullvad on while I was browsing the internet, and I happened to bluescreen. Next thing I know, I turn my computer back on, and it says I’m connected to my ethernet, but I have no actual internet connection. I’ve done seemingly everything to try to fix this, including buying a new motherboard cause I originally thought my network card died, but I’m positive that mullvad did something to my pc. I’m not able to even open mullvad to try and connect and disconnect to maybe fix the issue, because I have no internet connection. This is my last resort before I wipe my entire drive.

I keep getting the “windows not responding (dns server)” error when doing the windows troubleshooting. I’ve done almost every single command I can do in the command prompt.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this I would appreciate it. Thanks.

This is the first time I’m hearing Mullvad doing this. I have Mullvad on both my laptop and gaming PC and they haven’t caused any problems. If I had to guess, the blue screen was something else and maybe it corrupted Mullvad? Have you uninstalled the program?

Also maybe you don’t have to switch. Have you thought about using Mullvad under wireguard or OpenVPN?

Suspect post here. First off, install a $5 wifi usb dongle and that will tell you if the problem is the network card. Secondly, start in safe mode and none of your VPN software will be loaded.

As far as I know, it’s nearly impossible for non-malware to actually brick the hardware on your computer.

So I had basically the same problem (although in my case I believe it was caused by mistakenly installing an old version of the beta windows client over the new one), and I’m gonna be upfront with you, what I ultimately did to fix it was do a system restore. I’ll talk a little bit more about what things I tried, but I eventually just decided that I was out of my depth looking any deeper into the issue.

I looked through a bunch of settings, tried the troubleshooter, tried resetting some drivers, used ethernet, wifi, and a wireless dongle, but just couldn’t drill down to the problem. Checking ipconfig and whatnot showed a lot of network interfaces with odd ip addresses, but manually setting things up correctly didn’t seem to change anything. Multiple DNS configs, full wipe of mullvad from the computer with Revo Uninstaller, restarts, shutdowns, and even a switch to my backup BIOS all did nothing. Couldn’t even ping the local network, got an error I’d never seen before (“General failure error”).

Somehow installing the old version messed up something so deep in the windows network stack that I just didn’t have the proper resources to figure it out, so system restore it was.

This article has a cursory explanation of where to begin with an issue like this:

It’s very likely that you simply need to point your dns and default gateway settings back to your router.
Regardless, don’t blame things you don’t understand on other peoples software. All the time they spend doing damage control on your erroneous post is time they don’t spend implementing features.

For others with similar problems. Been using Mullvad for years and will keep doing so, but it has killed my internet at least half a dozen times and has needed an uninstalling and reinstalling (and once a system restore) to get things going again. There are a couple reasons this can happen, from unexpected shutdowns to firewalls and antiviruses. The software also tends to not play well with Windows security; I just can’t use security and mullvad at the same time on any of the computers I’ve owned. Recently turned them back on without thinking and as soon as I fired up the vpn everything went to shit again. 20 mins of reboots, uninstalling mullvad, disabling security and reinstalling mullvad and I was up and running.

I dont think I have used mullvad under wireguard or openvpn before. The bluescreen wasn’t caused by Mullvad itself, but ever since it happened I can no longer connect properly to the internet, and it’s doing something to my DNS. I’ve tried uninstalling mullvad through the “uninstall a program” menu in windows to no avail. I actually did this with all my vpns to make sure but I still wasn’t able to fix the issue.

I also am not able to even open mullvad to check my version or to directly get some sort of crash log because anytime I try to open it, it either does not open at all or it says “connecting to Mullvad Service” forever.

can you help me with mullvad vpn

Ive started in safe mode and my internet still didn’t work. I’ve also used a wifi USB and the internet still didnt work.

Could be a corrupt network driver.

I use multiple vpns because they each provide multiple features.

My internet doesnt work at all, which was caused by me using mullvad when I bluescreened (the bluescreen wasnt an error from mullvad or any vpn.) I’ve tried uninstalling and it doesn’t help. Unless there is a different method of uninstalling than the deafult “uninstall a program” in the windows menu.

I’ve done this but I haven’t gotten a response in a while. Do they have operating hours or some sort of faster support?
