Netflix SSL error

Is anyone having issues with Netflix the past few days on AppleTV connected using the manual dns option? Netflix comes up, but when I attempt to play [some] episodes, I receive the following error:
“A problem occurred while playing this item. Try again later, or select a different item. Go to www.Netflix.com/support for more information.
An SSL error has occurred and a secure connection to the server cannot be made.”

I have tried the dns setting ending in .01 and .02. IP address is registered (also confirmed with support that it is registered).

I contacted the express support on chat and, as always, they were less than helpful. Canned responses that are copy/pasted with large lags between responses.

My gut says the ones that play are available in my region whereas the ones that do not are not, which to me tells me that the vpn is not working for Netflix.

Any insight?

ETA that I noted that Netflix had recently updated so I uninstalled and reinstalled the app but it did not resolve the issue.

I’ve noticed the same on my side recently, using Apple TV via the MediaStreamer DNS. However, the content I was playing was a Netflix worldwide title, so my guess is that this error was being triggered by the DNS settings themselves, and it wasn’t related to the title I was trying to stream. In any event, I tried killing the app a few times and eventually the error went away, allowing me to play my show with no problem. I haven’t seen this error in perhaps the last 48 hours.

Oh my god. I thought I was the only one. Same issue and as the other commenter pointed out, killing the app and restarting seems to fix the problem (most of the times, not all of the time though). It is very annoying. I’ve already reached out to ExpressVPN support a couple of times but no help.

I’m having the same problem with Netflix and Max.

Seems to be hit or miss for me, but Netflix was the one app on AppleTV that worked consistently up until recently!

I’ve had this issue for at least a month now. ExpressVPN support refuses to acknowledge that it is a VPN issue, though it clearly is as it’s only other ExpressVPN customers that are having this problem.

They just want to waste an hour of your life turning it on and off, unauthorize, reauthorize, sign in, sign out, restart, recycle network etc. even though the services all work on other devices. Then they try to sell you a router to replace a $700 mesh network. :man_facepalming:

My guess is the ones who test the connection see that you’re able to logon and see the library titles, they assume it’s working properly. Most outages your profile image won’t display and you usually cannot even login. This is some in-between voodoo.

The worse part is that I can’t even watch without the VPN because Netflix thinks I’m logging in away from home when I’m not using the VPN

There is a general error in Express VPN that they seem to be unable to fix. I can’t watch Disney+ or Hulu, and Netflix gets the SSL error.
For Netflix, if you try again and again, eventually it will work (at least it does for me).

Same happening to me, with express vpn loaded directly on Apple TV. Same issue with Netflix, Also not consistent. Crazy how it changes based on whatever I don’t know

Ughhhhh. It is now occurring for EVERY SHOW on Netflix rendering the app essentially useless. ExpressVPN is doing nothing to remedy.

I am facing the same issue with NordVpn and I am connected using native Apple TV app.

Thank you - this is helpful. I will continue to install and reinstall the app. :sob:

Update: After about 12 hours I contacted customer service, and while on hold the DNS just suddenly resolved itself. All apps are working for the moment.

This has been the same for me recently. Some shows play fine and others do not. I am still at a loss as to why. Shame express vpn will not accept as an issue and remedy.

Hey. Does your laptop or PC connect to the same Wi-Fi as you AppleTv?
If yes. Login to ExpressVPN website on you computer and while logged in try Netflix on your AppleTV again. This works for me. I don’t know why. Would love for someone to tell me how this works.

The solution I found was to switch to a VPN that has a native app for Apple TV.

Same with me has been working well until today have you had any luck ?

My issue is unpredictable and intermittent. A show that shows the above error will play fine one day and then have the error again the next.

Follow up for you - are they still working consistently? Mine resolves and reappears what seems to be based on the wind.

They just added VPN support for apple TV, so there’s an app now instead of the DNS settings.
Hopefully that will solve the issue, but I didn’t get the chance to try it yet.
