What others wrote is true but for now exist one sort of rule break, proton VPN free version should be safe even if it’s slow.
That’s because the free vpn is paid by those who pay for the actual vpn and proton has always been a security in terms of privacy for various reasons, first of all being that I never heard of privacy leak from them, so there are reasons to think it’s safe but there is no certainty.
If you don’t mind slow speed and you download once in a while you could go with proton VPN free, but in piracy if you should pay for one thing, that thing is the VPN.
In my opinion you shouldn’t use a free one when I did I always got the letter from my provider saying I’m gonna get in trouble
The only time a service is free is when you are the product they are selling.
They will sell or give up you info and ip address of court ordered. Plus they keep records. Paid vpn do not store or keep your information so when asked they can legitly say I don’t know.
Just build one by yourself using openvpn. Use it and lose it

Port forwarding is absolutely not necessary for torrenting. It helps mostly with seeding and increases download speed because more peers will be available, but OP will be totally fine without it.

You can do that but your answer is in your question. You o gro the paid service or to carry over after the trail you need your information which you are trying to avoid.
Always use a vpn when torrenting. That’s a rule of thumb. I mean at the least you can dl a torrenting web app and run opera gx that has a con service and torrent using that browser.
