ProtonVPN is causing my Mac to panic, and others are reporting similar problems on apple official forum

Hey all,

New protonVPN user here. so far so great, I love paying with Bitcoin!

One major problem though. A few days ago, my computer started crashing randomly from a series of CPU panics related to watchdog functionality, like this:

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff8021b449ad): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from remoted in 180 seconds

service returned not alive with context : is_alive_func returned unhealthy : device not connected (code: 0x2

It happens when i come back to the computer after it’s awakened from sleep. I was scouring the apple forums, feeling furious with macOS, until i saw this post, and it hit me: This started happening the very day i started using ProtonVPN, and it’s happening when i have my VPN on, just like the used posted there.

Is Proton aware of this? If not, now they are! Please look into this. Willing to help how i can, but if it’s not resolved soon I’m gonna have to go back to expressVPN.

Hi! Thank you for your report. Our team is aware of the issue, and they’ve reported the problem directly to Apple, since the fix needs to be implemented on their side. We’re sorry for any inconvenience that this may have caused you.

Please report that through a ticket directly from within the app, for the relevant team to be made aware.

Turn off kill switch.

I had this exact issue. Do you have kill switch turned on? When I turned it off, my mac stopped randomly crashing. I’m not 100% sure if kill switch was the problem though. Could have been something else. Hope this helps

Done. Will update when they reply.

This was it. Really does put the “KILL” in kill switch.

I have had it on, will turn it off and see how things go. Thanks!
