Look at r/vpn_help, the sub description, the (2) accounts that post to it, the 2 mods (same 2 accounts), the ONLY vpn that gets mentioned in that sub, their claims about vpns and what they are and aren’t good for, and what they post across the rest of reddit. They outright lie about what a vpn does and doesn’t protect you from, constantly. BEST case scenario is that they’re legit but have extremely deceitful business practices. More likely you’re just paying an unknown unknown to spy on you.
I know it’s not directly related to monero mining but I saw one of those two accounts shilling in this subreddit and thought some of you would appreciate a warning. Plus those shitass memes full of their logo should be deleted from every server and hard drive on the planet.
This is not an endorsement of any particular vpn service. Just a non endorsement of an especially shitty one.
Solid! Thanks for the headsup. A lot of these shady VPNs just exist to mine your data. If you’re not stuck on using a VPN, look into free proxy lists instead. Services like Oxylabs are offering them now, and they can be a safer and more transparent alternative for some use cases.
The problem with using VPNs is that you have to trust them. There are a million of them out there a and most are just white label resellers of services offered by others. Its all theater imo.
Help, I bought a premium package without doing this proper research. I already emailed support to cancel my subscription, but now I’m worried about my info being taken. What can I do?
I’ve been with Mullvad for around nine years now. They take Bitcoin, and their system doesn’t even use registration or an email address - you download their app, which is a wrapped version of OpenVPN, and it auto generates an account number. They provide settings if you want to use OpenVPN, and have been transitioning to WireGuard as well. I’ve downloaded all manner of recently released… Linux ISOs… that I knew were being tracked and never once have I received an ISP nasty gram. You can pick from multiple exit nodes in many countries, and speeds are good - I’ve gone as high as 325Mb/s, about 41MB/s.
how do you keep the exit IP getting traced back to you?
lets say you are renting a box on linode or digital ocean and using that as the vpn exit. if some 3 letter agency asks linode who own’s the box with x IP they might just say it’s you or give the ip you used to connect at the time? would sharing the exit IP with other users not atleast give some kind of plasuable deniablity ?
Will do. I personally have expressvpn which is great for Netflix but I really don’t trust them at all. Aside from the astroturfing their live customer support won’t tell you anything unless you tell them the email you signed up with. Also, they don’t take xmr.
I was a noob (still am) and got suckered. Never again.
