Router recommendations for VPN tunneling

Hi, I live in Europe and a relative lives in the US (New York)

We are planning to share some VPN tunneling so he can connect to my residential IP address, and viceversa.

Goal is to access catalog content for streaming services.

I have a Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra and I understand that setting a VPN server so my relative can access to my IP should be easy : planning on setting a specific VLAN for him, so he cannot access my internal network, and he is isolated from my own LAN traffic.

From his side, he just moved in into a new appartement, and doesn’t have Internet access yet.

Based on your experience, what would be the best ISP that he can sign up to have his own router and set a VPN server? Not sure how it works in the US, but that should avoid him to pay a monthly rental fee, and set the server. I doubt that ISP router can do that.

Also, he is not very tech savvy, so any reccomendations on how to do this easily and not painfully would be appreciated.

Thanks y’all!

His ISP is dictated by his location, none of know where in the giant state of NY he lives, but most will offer a IP and not GCNAT, he would just need to setup a DDNS service too so you can hit that domain and not an IP since it will more than likely change.

A GL.Inet router like a Flint 2 would be easy to set up with a VPN client/server.

He lives in Queens if that helps. Can you recommend a free DDNS service?

It’s very unlikely the IP would change, unless he turned off his router for a few days.

It does not help me that he lives in Queens, that is a big area he’ll just need to do his own research probably.

DuckDNS is always free.
