Safest method for Torrenting with a VPN on unRAID

Hi, I’m using Unraid for torrenting, mainly on semi-private and public trackers. I already have a good ratio on these trackers, so I believe using a VPN is a more cost-effective option for me compared to a seedbox.

I’m seeking advice on the safest methods to use with a VPN. I’m considering whether to use the qbittorrentvpn (binhex container), which includes a kill switch, or to start the VPN on Unraid and route all traffic through the tunnel using the method described here: [Reddit link above]. There is a claim that a kill switch isn’t safe, and I want to avoid any IP leaks.

I need to maintain a seeding ratio of about 1:1 for each file to keep my account in good standing. What would be the safest method to torrent and seed approximately 10 TB of data? While a seedbox is an option, it is more expensive.

Thank you!

I use binhex qbittorrentvpn app and never had issues. I’m pretty sure it only connects to the internet if the VPN successfully connects otherwise it doesn’t (kill switch type thing) - please someone correct me if wrong.

Edit: didn’t read full post before commenting…

I use the binhex delugevpn container. I like it because it shows the IP in the status bar. Have never had a problem and port forwarding with my VPN provider works flawlessly as well. For some reason I could not get the qbitorrentvpn container to play nice with my VPN.

Just use private trackers.

Did you end up staying on Gluetun?

Why torrent? There are other ways…

I used to have an openVPN container and routed my qbittorrent container’s internet thought it so it would be an effective kill switch if the openVPN container was not working. However I stopped using a VPN altogether due to the lack of port forwarding and I use private torrent sites. Does your VPN support port forwarding?

Is it possible to test the killswitch feature with this container ? Like stop the vpn to see if qbit stop to work ?

I was browsing and found this. I’m not sure why Unraids built-in VPN isn’t recommended more often. I spent over a day trying to configure deluge and it was a nightmare of bad advice and rabbit holes. I dropped my WG config into unraids built-in VPN and was done in 15 minutes.

I’ve never been able to set it up properly, is there a comprehensive and up-to-date how-to? Haven’t found a rookie-friendly one so far… thanks!

Yes I think it’s the safest way. Thank you !

The tracker with the most french content and good quality is semi-private. So I have no choice.

Like usenet. The one and true king of the seas.

I know I will use usenet too. But I want French / multi content and some semi-private torrent trackers are specialized in that.

Yes I have protonVPN. With gluetun I can allow port fowarding in a VPN container.

I can verify binhex QBT will not connect to trackers if the VPN is down. The downside is you may not know without viewing info on trackers or have a way to view if your VPN connection is live.

I use AirVPN and keep my account page open that shows active connections

I can think of a reason, Im trying to get this right using ProtonVPN and my qbitorrent shows as firewalled connection which likely indicates port forwarding is not working correctly.

Depends on who your vpn provider is but it’s as simple as downloading the fireguard configuration file and then in Unraid clicking the import tunnel button I think it was. Navigate to the file and its setup. Select the wg0 (most likely) interface as your containers network and it will connect through your wireguard connection. Not for something like ProtonVPN this won’t be the best experience and it seems port forwarding will not work.

Why not keep gluetun, they have a built-in kill switch:

Built in firewall kill switch to allow traffic only with needed the VPN servers and LAN devices

Did you have problems with it? Otherwise I think it’s safe.

Thanks! But actually, I’m using PIA which don’t provide config files for Wireguard (only for OpenVPN)…

Tell me if I’m wrong, but I thought the Unraid built-in Wireguard feature allowed us to create and host a VPN server directly in Unraid, thus removing the need to subscibe to an external VPN Provider.

Am I thinking straight? :))
