does it make sense from a privacy perspective to have a separate account for Protonmail and ProtonVPN? Since it’s generally not a great idea to put all eggs in the same basket.
There’s a reason they offer mail and VPN bundled together at a discount, because it suits the needs of the majority. Personally I made separate mail and VPN accounts only to ask support to combine them later, and I have been happy with the simplicity ever since.
If for some reason you require anonymity to the same extent that you need privacy then that could be a different story. This blog entry should help to understand the differences https://protonmail.com/blog/anonymity-vs-privacy/
“Eggs in one basket” refers to not picking the same provider for everything, though. You don’t really gain anything (in that sense) from picking both ProtonMail and ProtonVPN…
I have one account for each.
Not because of privacy but because of how their subscription system is set up.
I want to have the freedom to cancel the vpn at any time without having to worry about being locked out of my email.
Well, it may also relate to not using the same credentials on multiple services which you might use on different systems. I think it is a shame that PM do not allows us to use different passwords or to turn of 2FA only for ProtonVPN!
Technically yes, even though I believe is against the terms of service,
I think this only applies to the vpn to prevent abuse.
Mail and vpn are different entities
Nah. They produce the same invoice for the mail and vpn. If you fail to pay it because you don’t want the vpn any more they’ll lock you out of the account
I’m aware there is a proper way to sort this out but i can’t be bothered to learn it.
I have the vpn on a virtual card i can just toggle off at any time and don’t worry they’ll lock me out of my email
I see. You didn’t need to downvote me though i never said i was sure but i had doubts
