Torrenting over VPN causing Internet to disconnect

I’ve been having troubles where if I download a torrent while on a VPN my internet will disconnect. Currently I’m on ProtonVPN, qbittorent, and using a wifi connection, but I’ve had the same problem when using TorGuard and a hardwired ethernet connection. Currently my solution is to unplug my wifi adapter and everything is good. But I’m only able to download for 5 minutes before it disconnects again. I’m thinking it might be something to do with windows or qbittorents ‘s settings. Any ideas?

The ISP knows you’re using a VPN and it knows you’re torrenting. Limit your upload speeds to 20% of the max and tweak it from there to see at which point they don’t disconnect you.

Today I started seeing similar issues with Torguard VPN and now I’m unexplainably unable to connect to Verizon home WiFi—torrents or not. I’m searching Reddit to figure it out.

Same for me in the last few weeks using ExpressVPN. Making sure there are no DNS leaks doesn’t seem to help. Maybe simon_zzz is right about ISPs detecting VPN use, but isn’t there a better solution than slowing DL speeds?

Might be ISP interference/throttling. Try with a mobile hotspot.

What ISP are you using?

How old is your router? Also have you tried using an Ethernet cable? (Trial and error)

I had a similar problem ages ago. I noticed it disconnected when the dnld speed spiked. In my case, limiting dnld speed to less than 5mbps solved it. This speed/discon is not an issue on my current provider tho, so relevance to your situation will vary…

Previously i was on att fiber but now I’m on cox
