Received my Unifi Express yesterday in the UK (kudos on the fast delivery). Not sure if I am expecting too much but the VPN client performance seems very poor. I am seeing no more than 4Mbps down/up. Any other early Expess adopters seeing similar throughput levels?
I’m definitely interested in hearing the results from others too as that would be… concerning. Your initial results push me toward a UDR (if it ever goes back in stock), though I’m hoping for something in a small-ish form factor with a bit more power.
I just posted in another thread but also here: Got my Unifi Express lately and configured several WireGuard VPN clients, including Proton VPN, and speeds average at around 20-30mbit/s. To compare: When using the native VPN clients for, in my case iOS and macOS, I’m seeing 500mbit/s (my connection is a 500mbit/s fiber). CPU seems to be not under huge strain, but maybe it’s more like MTU or a different settings-based error. However, this is not something I can configure in the Network app in Unifi. Let’s share here if any solution can be found.
I submitted a ticket to unifi, sent all my logs and Screenshots. Their reply : “I have verified the speed with my internal team, and the throughput you are experiencing aligns with the expected performance from UNiFi Express.”
I am a bit disappointed to be honest.
Thought I’d follow up on this to say I’ve changed from OpenVPN to Wireguard and now seeing 15Mbps down.
Further context: Test was run against a ProtonVPN UK server. Tried multiple nodes and saw same results unfortunately.
Sorry - only just seen this. I’ve ended up ditching the Express and buying a UDR. I have found the Express to be quite buggy and needs a reboot every 5-7 days. Eventually the GUI grinds to a halt and connectivity is inconsistent both on the WAN and LAN side. Hopefully software updates can fix this over time but it was causing frustrations.
Hi Steve, I observe the same. I use Mullvad VPN via WireGuard I reach no more than 20 MBits. OpenVPN performs worse. I think it’s because of the CPU.
And you are in the UK, judging from your name?
Interesting, what are your max. speeds (download and upload) with a VPN on the UDR?

Yeah located in the UK. Tested on both Proton and Nord UK servers and both gave same results unfortunately.
70mb but that’s my ISP limit. A friend of mine gets 220mb using Wireguard to ProtonVPN on his UDR (500mb connection).
Where were you able to grab a UDR from UK? Been struggling to find one
