Use Tasker to turn off VPN when using Android Auto (and then turn it back on)

I finished setting up a pi-hole server on Google’s cloud platform that allows me to adblock using a WireGuard VPN connection. One of the limitations of this setup is that I am limited to 1Gb transfer a month. I would like to disable the Always-on VPN when I connect to something data heavy like Android Auto, or a streaming app (or both). Can I use Tasker to accomplish this? Can I then auto re-enable the VPN when I’m done with the data heavy app? Finally, is there a walkthrough to configure Tasker?

That would be so miserable to constantly connect and disconnect a VPN. It takes time to establish and terminate a VPN connection. Why wouldn’t you just use DNS over HTTP if you’re on android 9+ or one of the many free ad blocking VPNs that create a local VPN with an adblock list?

I strongly recommend that. I do that with my wifi and data connectio using nextdns.
