Visiting China (Shijiazhuang) for a week from the US. Which VPN (to use on Mac on Hotel wifi)? And more Qs

I read on this sub that LetsVPN does not work well from home/hotel wifi. Is there a reliable VPN that’s budget friendly for just one week of usage?

My Verizon cellphone will be roaming (Travel Pass). Will I lose all my access to Gmail, Instagram, FB, Google Maps app, Apple Map, etc.?

I might get a Chinese SIM from family to insert in my second phone (currently retired). If so, what apps should I download now in the US that would be useful when I’m in China on the SIM?

If you have roaming you will have access to all that you want/need.

Surely, there must be more interesting places to go than to Shijiazhuang?

Download the Mullvad APP. You will have to pay for the full month, not just a week…but it only costs around $5 or so. Works great.

I’ve been using LetsVPN nearly 24 hours a day for the past six weeks all over the country, both on hotel Wi-Fi and on my Chinese SIM, and it’s been perfect.

I’m on Verizon. Once roaming is turned on you have an automatic VPN with it. So it’s like you never left the US.

If you use a VPN (I’m using Let’s VPN), it will get through a using local cell phone as a hotspot or a hotel wifi.

If you stay at a fancier hotel, you know more than 50 USD a night, they usually have a VPN with their wifi.

I always use Pandafan, it’s pretty stable but a lil expensive compare to other VPNs. If you are using your US phone number you wont be affected by the GFW

I’m currently in China and have LetsVPN for when connected to hotel/train wifi and it’s worked perfectly for us

I had issues with Mullvad but atleast it’s cheap. Maybe only the LA,NYC and sometimes the UK severs worked. 95 percent of the servers do not work in China. Also the ones that do are extremely slow like less than 10 mbps or even worse.

LetsVPN worked fine for me, too. More reliable than the much more expensive Astrill, actually, in my experience.
