VPN and WiFi speeds?

I have 3 Eero Pro 6s, all nodes are wirelessly connected to gateway. 1000/30 connection that seems pretty stable, shared between 50-70 devices. I previously had the Eero Pro and liked it, and the Pro 6 represents a significant speed increase even with the current firmware.

I notice that late at night (when our work VPNs are disconnected), WiFi speeds from the nodes jump from about 200 to 500. Is this just me, or have others noticed it too?

Hello u/Charlie190,

VPNs can slow down the speed based off the encryption process used to secure your data. It is a side effect of the security that a VPN provides. This is expected behavior.

Are you talking connections through the VPN? Or just in general on your network?

Thanks for letting me know! Didn’t realize how much it could affect performance.

It might not be just the encryption that is causing this as well. There could be some bottlenecking happening on the VPN side which is only allowing up to the 200 Mbps that you are experiencing while connected to the VPN.

There is also the possibility that the speed is just faster late at night because there are less people on the network. If you stay connected to your VPN over night do you still experience the reduced speeds?

I think u/eerosupport misunderstood, then. Your overall network performance should not degrade because a device on the network is using a VPN service.

I do. It does appear to be the VPN, rather than fewer people on or streaming. I could totally believe that our VPNs are throttled, and that could be a major factor.

Whenever SQM appears, would that help?

Ok…I understand that the VPN device is heavily throttled, but it does make sense that the rest of the network should be unaffected.

Sadly, it does appear to have an outsized effect on non-VPN devices.

Sadly, no. If the VPN is what is throttling your speed then nothing you do short of not using the VPN will help. When you’re using a VPN all of your internet traffic goes through the VPN to create the security that it provides. So, there is not really a way to get around the throttling if it is being caused by the VPN and you need to use the VPN.

I apologize for the confusion! In this case, I suggest giving us a call or sending in an email so we can investigate this more directly.

Darn! But thanks for responding over a holiday week. Hope y’all have a nice day.

What about using Eero’s VPN and Guardian service? Does your VPN slow download speeds?
