VPN makes apps think not connected to Wi-Fi

I have the Verizon companion app installed on my kids phone (both Android). This installs a VPN to monitor their traffic and blocks when needed. The problem is that when the VPN is connected it makes apps think they are not connected to Wi-Fi. For example, if they want to download a bunch of videos from YouTube for a long trip, YouTube will show “waiting for Wi-Fi” and not download even though they are connected to Wi-Fi. I tried working with Verizon for months and they did nothing. They just kept saying it’s not an issue. Anyone else see this issue and have suggestions?

Try this:
Go to YouTube then click on your user icon in the top right corner, go to Settings then go to Background & downloads and uncheck Download over Wi-Fi only.

Let me know if this works.

Yes that works but not a great solution. This is what they have to do but if they forget to turn this back off it eats up all their data when not on Wi-Fi.
