VPN recommendation

What would be a good premium VPN to add to UniFi. And how does one go about it? Consider me a newbie, but with basic networking knowledge.

I use PIA (Private Internet Access) personally and have done for years, but only recently added it my UDMP.

You basically sign up for an account.

  • Once that is done you can generate an OpenVPN configuration file from your account settings - set which server/geolocation you want to use, encryption type, port etc
  • On your Unifi Network device:
  • Settings > Teleport and VPN > VPN Client > Create New connection
  • Add your user/password for the VPN account ( from PIA or whatever service you choose)
  • Name it, upload the configuration file generated at step 1.
  • Test and Save

Check it comes up - you should see a connection status along with your VPN IP address then you want to route traffic/devices over that VPN connection.

On your Unifi device:

Settings > Traffic Management > Routes > Create New Route

Select All traffic ( or specific if you prefer for say a particular web domain you want to only go via the VPN - things like say streaming services for example)

Target - this is the device(s) to apply the route to - one/many/all whichever you want

Interface - you will find the named VPN connection in the list along with your standard WAN1/WAN2 connections.

Save that - give it a descriptive name if you like to manage later to identify it.

Lo and behold all traffic from that device you selected in the route will now go over the VPN instead of the WAN1/WAN2 connection.

I also recommend ProtonVPN, the free plan is a great place to start and test out. Although the premium plan ups the speed, and gives premium servers.

I use NordVPN but I have also tried ExpressVPN with positive results.

I setup the VPN on UniFi and made an SSID called “Canada” so when I connect the TV, phone or computer on that SSID I get Canadian content (and my wife can work remotely). When I disconnect WiFi to run wired or switch ch it regular SSID I am back to US content.

I too use Proton, bought the better settup, and I really like the mail too VS any others !
