Hi guys! I’m going to be back in China for winter break and I need a working VPN for uni work and online end of semester exams. Do you guys have some suggestions for fast and reliable VPNs? I was using Astrill, which was working fine before I left to uni but I’ve seen people saying that it’s kinda gone to shit now. Also, one of my friend in China is saying that ExpressVPN practically doesn’t work at all.
Also, I’m not very familiar with the techy stuff so some user friendly suggestions would be better! Feel free to DM me, thanks!

Don’t get express. It was fine before with occasional problems but now is completely worthless. Maybe you’ll get 10 minutes where it works every few days.
Same boat as you but actually flew into China over a week ago. I’m using Astrill and it is fine most of the time. Just depends on the server you’re using and I usually use the top US ones from the speed test.
But my school’s website didn’t need the VPN for access for my final exam so maybe worth looking into in your end.
A VPS + Wireguard. I’m hosting one right now for my friend in China and has no issues for weeks. Also the setup was really simple. I can share it with you if you pm me
Search this topic and see the responses as it seems to be asked every other day. Express sucks now, not Astril. So get Astril again or set up your own.
So I’m in the US on holdiay right now so can’t comment to any degradation since November, but I have astrill, Nord, express, surfshark, and socketpro. Astrill has had the best performanc, express is completely useless now. Nord and surfshark never worked. Socketpro is good but I don’t do any private stuff (banking) on there.
Also I’ve noticed VPN performance on my iphone is much worse than my PC with the same provider. Not sure why. Socketpro has fixed that issue though.
Wait, why don’t you use one of Chinese VPNs or proxies? People who’ve worked for Chinese companies that need access to Facebook and Google services tell me those work marvelously, and they’re also obviously available for private customers since some young people here routinely use Google, YouTube, and Insta. Sure, you’ll probably have no privacy, but it’s not like you are going to watch some weird porn or criticize CCP. Are you too edgy for Chinese VPN now that you study abroad?
