What antivirus you recommend?

I use avira and I think I need a new one

Hello,

As far as protection goes, any of the programs listed in the wiki at https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/wiki/index#wiki_anti-virus_.28aka_anti-malware.29_developers would be a good start.

Also be sure to read the https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/wiki/index#wiki_securing_your_computer section towards the end for additional tips for protecting your computer.

I was a long-time user (10+ years) of Bitdefender Total Security. I like their firewall. The only downside was that it slowed down my PC, a lot. So when my subscription ended I went to the new Antivirus that I got through my ISP (F-Secure Safe) for no extra fee and with that Antivirus I’m using Portmaster for firewalling.

For me, an extra firewall is needed because I don’t trust any of the applications you can run on the PC. I know that PC has its own firewall but it’s simple and you can’t see what’s happening (in and out connections live. Both Bitdefender firewall and Portmaster give you a detailed view of what’s happening.

You can check AV-TEST where they test different Antivirus software monthly and rate those. What I can see you can pick any Antivirus YOU like and be safe. The choice is a matter of taste.

For now (April 2024) Avast has the highest score when it comes to Protection, Performance, and usability. But we all know that Avast has a bit bad reputation when it comes to privacy, they collect user data and use it for their liking. It doesn’t mean that other Antivirus software doesn’t do that too, they haven’t been caught in action yet.

I would recommend Bitdefender as a long-term user or F-Secure as I’m using it today and I’m satisfied with it.

Malwarebytes / Bitdefender

If you want a paid one use malwarebytes

Kaspersky is pretty good but if you love sandboxing you can use Comodo.

I am a Kaspersky user for the last 10 years.

I use avg free which is pretty good. PC Magazine reviews 3rd party testing. Bit Defender paid and Kaspersky paid come out near the top.

Malwarebytes is great for extracting so so for detection.

Comodo antivirus it has many features for free at least 40 features including its own browser

If you already use surfshark for vpn their anti-virus is pretty good and considering the price for a separate vpn and separate anti-virus it’s a Hella steal

I used a ton of antivirus with custom set up to get more security. Short answer use built in windows defender and sleep well

I feel that the only serious suggestion here was Comodo, maybe Kaspersky.
But all the rest is garbage, I have to admit I’ve still to find a good alternative. Feel that all are intrusive in some way

Emsisoft as paid recommendation because it uses Bitdefender as second engine and their own but for free recommendations it’s Kaspersky if you live outside us

F-Secure, Kaspersky (Free), ESET or Bitdefender (Free)

keep Avira and get a 2nd. opinion scanner like Norton power eraser and or Hitmanman pro

Honestly, none. I suggest only downloading things from reputable sources or building from source after reading the source code. Many of these AVs are questionable, and you can’t ever fully rely on them. I also like to open them up in IDA and check them out if they’re not from reputable sources.

I live in Germany is it available there?

Most people aren’t even wearing masks anymore, even though COVID still wrecking havoc. They’re not going to learn how to decompile and analyze large volumes of source code in various programming languages or use IDA to analyze binaries. We pay specialists to do that.

It’s available in Germany because it’s outside USA
