When connected to my Outline VPN, be it on iOS or Windows 10, whoer.net shows the IP address of both my Outline VPN Digital Ocean server and my actual IP address. This doesn’t seem right? Presumably the VPN should not be disclosing my actual IP address but only the Outline VPN server address?
I am getting lots of captcha checks (asking me to identify buses/cars/roads etc on a grid of pictures - I suppose to make sure I am not a bot) when on my Outline VPN. Anyway to avoid or reduce occurrence of this?
wow! Same here! It shows my actual IP address as well! I have a server from a less popular provider, so I think it must be something else!
EDIT: Alright, I did some research on this and found two things. The difference between your system’s time zone and the actual server’s time zone is revealing your region! The other one is WebRTC leakage! There are a few extensions for different browsers to prevent the leak. It might actually work. But the main issue is the protocol/app that is being used for the VPN service. I don’t have this issue when I’m connected through my workplace’s VPN which uses Cisco’s app.
Hi! Thanks for reporting this! What Outline client are you using that is leaking your IP address via WebRTC? I just tested on Android and macOS and I’m not seeing my real IP when I check it on whoer.net. Was this on another platform? Thanks!
I tried using OpenVPN to connect to a commercial VPN I also have. This does not show my actual IP address, so I think it is something with the Outline client.
I am using Outline Beta client v1.1.2 on Windows 10. Is that the latest version?
Also, I have since downloaded the WebRTC Network Limiter extension from the Chrome store. If I select the “Use my proxy server (if present)” it seems my actual IP address does not show on whoer.net. That seems to be the only way, although not sure what it means re incompatibility of applications etc.
Is there a better way of doing it than using the WebRTC Network Limiter extension?
Hi - Try downloading from getoutline.org. The latest version is v.1.2.1, and it operates as a fully system VPN, so it should do a better job at this particular issue. Can you try again with the new version and let us know how it goes?
Is there a way of getting old versions of Outline? I installed the full system VPN (v1.2.1) but it is causing problems for me and I’d prefer to run the most recent non-full system version VPN, even if there is an IP leak etc? This is because my corporate laptop needs to connect to its VPN for outlook etc, but I want to channel my browser connection etc through Outline VPN.
Not to hijack this thread, but will the current version of outline on Windows update automatically? Is there any action required by an end user to switch to the full system VPN version from the old one?
Edit: I didn’t realize how old this thread is… I guess I’m not hijacking anything haha
I have the latest Outline VPN from getoutline.org (but note this is still v1.1.2, not 1.2.1) and still getting this issue. Are you able to advise? Thanks.
Hi Elliot, Would you mind connecting with the 1.2.1 client, and sending feedback through the app? Some more technical data gets to us when you submit through the app, and it might help us troubleshoot. If the problem that you are experiencing is that you seemingly connect successfully but nothing loads, would you mind running “route print” on the Windows terminal, and sending me the outcome on private message? Thanks!
Regarding operating as a browser-only VPN: We currently don’t have plans to support two modes, but you CAN use the Shadowsocks Windows client, that does operate as a browser-only VPN: https://shadowsocks.org/en/download/clients.html
It does! But we haven’t released the full system VPN version of Outline yet. If you are interested in receiving an early preview, please send me a direct message
We have rolled out the full system VPN only to 50% of users. If you want to make sure you are on it, please uninstall version v1.1.2 and install v.1.2.11 here:
The problem is I have a corporate VPN that works I think at system level, and it seems like Outline 1.2.1 client bumps this out, so even if I test teh Outline client and then choose to uninstall it, the corporate VPN no longer works. If the corporate VPN no longer works, I cannot access my corporate emails, in which case I have to go back to my work IT team to reinstall, which is really embarrassing.
I had no problem in the earlier Outline VPNs though.
We are actively working on it and hope to be able to start the gradual release (~10% of users) probably by early next week. It really helps us, in terms of building confidence that we won’t break existing clients, to have early beta testers who are happy to test builds for us. I’m happy to send you the latest for you to send to your client. Please direct message me
Please can you let me in on something. So many websites restrict my surfing on their site (I am using Amazon VPS whose servers are well-known among many others btw) because they know the origin of my web traffic. Is there any way to elude this restriction (I’m assuming I get sidelined because the IP address is coming from a well-known server which is already blacklisted. Can I surf with my own hostname and assigned IP, or better still, a hostname and IP address that mimics the popular well-known ISP servers? Is there any way your VPN an make any difference?
