It’s not my configuration, or the server I’m connecting to, or my own connection, or anything else I can figure. I can’t watch YouTube (or browse the internet) without it being constantly interrupted using Proton VPN. I’ve tried everything. It shouldn’t be this way. It’s totally unacceptable in modern age for this price. Either it works, or it doesn’t, and so far, Proton VPN isn’t working right.
I have to CONSTANTLY open the Proton VPN app and disconnect/reconnect. And using a 3rd party app doesn’t help. I’ve tried changing all kinds of settings. Nothing.
We’d appreciate it if you could send us a bug report with the error logs through the app, so we can help you with possible troubleshooting suggestions: https://protonvpn.com/support/report-a-bug
You’ll also help us by sending us a report so we can document & fix any existing bugs in the client you’re using.
Not my experience on Apple devices (Mac and iOS). The only issue is that sometimes when I wake them up, the VPN doesn’t auto connect properly so I need to disconnect and connect again.
No problem on my apple devices. It could very well be an issue with the hops from your house → to VPN → to destination and vice versa. do a traceroute. check for packet loss.
is this the first time happening? or your first time using a vpn. because to me it sounds like your internet is having a hard time using a wire guard protocol. i dont use proton vpn but i use a different one and haven’t had a single issue but im not here to steal a client of theirs. you should try openvpn protocol if protonvpn has it. which should give better compatibility with internet.
It’s has to be IPV6 which Proton will be releasing later this year. Only VPNs I don’t have an issue with are the ones that assign IPv6 and doesn’t block them.
I’ve had dropped connections quite often over the last week, on a Linux machine, where the app worked just fine before then. Haven’t checked the logs, yet.
Done! I’m skeptical my issue will have a quick fix. It feels systemic. And if I was a business, I’d consider it a major security flaw, because the solution is to manually disconnect and reconnect. Well, as soon as you disconnect and reconnect, you force the app to disable the Kill All switch feature. As data then has “permission” to load in the background (or foreground), totally defeating the security/privacy features of using Proton VPN service.
Isn’t that a security flaw? If you have the Kill All switch feature enabled, then as soon as you manually disconnect to reconnect, the data begins loading (e.g., background processes, webpages, OS services, videos, streaming, etc.) Not a huge deal for most, but totally defeats the purpose of the Proton VPN. Also, it’s a total pain in the ass! 1.1.1.1 never has this problem, and Proton VPN is much older. Just my 2 cents
Problem is the “hiccup” in service, which happens every 15-45 minutes, forces me to go into the app, disconnect, reveal all my network info, and then reconnect. (Happens on both cellular and Wi-Fi: two totally different providers.) Because as soon as you manually disconnect, the Kill All switch feature ends and data starts flowing in the background. Not a big deal, but let’s say you’re downloading a file. Do you want it constantly interrupted? Or better yet, simply streaming video. Having to constantly reconnect is a pain.
Kill switch blocks your connection in case of an accidental disconnection from the VPN. If you manually disconnect/connect, it won’t trigger in that case (unless you’re using permanent killswitch, which is only available on some of our clients).
