Wifi Calling - one way audio

Does anyone else have problems with wifi calling on T-Mobile?

I never had issues with Verizon, but with T-Mobile, about a third of the time I only get one-way audio (either I can’t hear the other person, or they can’t hear me). I’ve used the same Pixel 5 with both carriers so I don’t think it’s the phone. Tried resetting carrier settings, to no avail.

Everything else about T-Mobile has been awesome, and I’m glad I switched, but this one issue is bugging me to the point where I’ve had to turn it off. Which is a bummer because it’s very useful in low signal situations.

EDIT: December 2022 update appears to finally fix this issue!

Same issue on Pixel 4a 5G but a Pixel 4a (non-5G) on the same network appears to work reliably. I though that turning off 5G on my phone was the fix and it seemed to work for a while but it’s not the fix, it does it with LTE only also.

It appears to be a problem with Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G.

Those who experience the issue – do you have Google Voice installed? I do because I use GV as my main number. There was some speculation in some other thread that GV could cause issues. Though I don’t really buy that because the Pixel 4a (non-5G) phone also uses GV and doesn’t seem to have these issues.

For now I switched GV to use wifi/data for calls (instead of carrier only) to actually be able to receive and make calls.

This started to happen to me a lot lately. I have wifi calling turned off in the time being.

I’ve been told by L2 Google support that a fix for this is being released this week (I assume in the September patch but I’m not sure). I have my doubts.

I’m having same issue that just started with all phones in my house in Verizon… I first thought it was my LTE signal extender that I got from Verizon… I disconnected it and noticed that it was still happening… went on settings and turned off WiFi calling and it started working… I haven’t reconnected LTE signal extender yet but will try when I get back home…

what could be causing this on WiFi calling…by the way we’re all using android phones s24 ultras and 1 s21

I had the same issue for a few years. Drove me nuts. I’m using a Linksys Velop home router. I came across a T-Mobile support article on WiFi calling on a corporate network outlining the ports that need to be opened on the firewall. After setting that up, worked like a charm. I usually had issues with not hearing the person on the receiving end. Hope this works for you too.

Wi-Fi Calling on a corporate network

Yes, I just signed up for T-Mobile and I had this same issue for my Galaxy S20 FE. Disabling wifi calling has worked so far but I’m going to try what that other person posted.

No issues with wifi calling despite several phones, different routers and different areas. My old place was in the city, near a military base, historical area and right next to a cell phone tower yet that combo means zero cellular coverage so wifi calling was my only option.

I am having this issue on my OnePlus 7T. I completely rely on WiFi calling at home, so I can’t just shut it off like many people. If I switch airplane mode on and back off then remake the call, it usually works fine, but this gets really annoying.

feel free to file a bug report here https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/183979330

I also have this issue with t-mobile, using a Pixel 5. Good to know it isn’t just me… thought I was going crazy.

I do not have Google Voice app installed. I used to use GV many years ago, but I think my number expired from not using it. Wifi calling used to work perfect for me, but now that I think about it, I can’t remember if it ever worked well on this Pixel 5. I can hear other fine, but they can’t hear me well, while wifi calling is enabled. I guess I’ll have to call tmobile.

I have this specifically on the wifi for Mt Sinai hospital and nowhere else. If this wifi is on all calls are sent audio only. I cannot hear anything unless I kill the wifi.

This is a cross-post from another similar thread:
I just went to Google Support for this exact issue and here’s what troubleshooting steps the tech had me do:

First, update all apps that are pending updates

After that:

Settings >> System >> Reset Options >> Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth

Once reset, Reboot the phone

Reconnect to WiFi because all your saved networks are now gone.

Test incoming/outgoing calls.

This worked.

Doesn’t appear to be a T-Mobile problem. Even though I don’t think other apps are related to the native Google Phone app she told me to make sure native apps are updated.

Had this happen today on a Pixel 5a (5G), no Google Voice, on a home router (TP-Link AX-6000).

Non-WiFi calling worked. WiFi calling worked after phone reboot. We’re on Metro by T-Mobile.

it hasn’t fixed my wife’s phone. What phone do you have?

You might be on to something here with the GV issue. My wife and I have identical S21 Ultras on T-Mobile and she doesn’t have the one-way calling issue, but I do. The only difference is that I use GV for a personal business number.

Thanks for sharing, and hopefully there’s some truth to it. They did finally bump the buganizer issue up to the highest priority level a few months back (before saying it was a duplicate of some other issue I don’t have access to), so maybe this is the result?

Interesting, thanks! I will give this a shot later with my router and report back in a few days after some testing. Sounds like you had the exact same issue as me.

Thanks. I have a T-Mobile Pixel 5 as well and was having the same issue. I couldn’t hear the other party, but they could hear me while on a wifi call.

After opening up these ports on my Synology router, wifi calling is working as expected. Thanks!
